Transparent 17, Cotton Candy 18: Scent

Story: In the Heart
Colors: Transparent 17 (Incense), cotton candy 18 (catching fireflies) with blossom's paint-by-numbers (Gail and Nathan spend a lazy summer night together).
Supplies and Materials: Miniature, yarn (milky way), frame, glitter ("The Summer night is like a perfection of thought." – Wallace Stevens), novelty beads (Sense memory).

Summary: Gail and Nathan at the lake.

Notes: Sensory exercise. Writing about smell is hard.


Fireflies spun lazily in the deepening dusk, and Gail nudged close to Nathan's side, inhaled. Underneath the scent of the water and the citronella candles, there was something heavier, muskier; the smell of aftershave and lemon soap overlaying the deeper smell of his body. She snuggled closer, pressed her nose into his neck.

He laughed in a short, startled burst, then turned into her, slipping his arms around her waist. "That tickles," he said into her hair.

"You smell nice," she told him, pressing her nose into his neck again. "Familiar."

"Not enough like you," he said, and kissed her.
