“She’s a beautiful child,” Frederic said.
“Yes,” Isadore said. “But is she healthy enough?”
“I don’t think the princess would let Victorie out of the nursery is she wasn’t healthy enough,” Frederic said speaking of his sister-in-law.
Isadore rubbed her hands together. “I suppose so, but the child is entirely too small for her age.”
“Edmond was rather on the scrappy side,” Frederic said referring to Victorie’s father.
Isadore allowed a smile to grace her face. Yes, Edmond had been scrappy, but he had made up for it in determination.
“She’s doing fine,” Frederic reassured his mother.
Isadore turned to her son.
“You should think of divorcing that woman and getting a legitimate child of your own,” Isadore said disapprovingly. It was well known that she didn’t think highly of Frederic’s queen, Elene.
Frederic sighed deeply. “Mother!”
“She’ll never bear you a child, Frederic. She’s far too old,” Isadore sniffed.
Frederic grimaced. “I think I hear someone calling for me.”
He turned away.
“Frederic, I wasn’t done speaking to you-,“Isadore called but Frederic had left the garden.
Isadore shook her head and turned back to watch Victorie.
