Summary: Peter sees patterns.
Hanif shoves him, grabs him by the arms and whirls him in an awkward dance, "Sorry, dey, sorry, haha," and lets go. Peter knows he is supposed to smile back but he can't today.
"Don't go to the creek," he says instead.
"What? Boy." He pokes Peter in the cheek. "Come with."
"I can't. I don't change anything. You do."
Hanif's eyes go big. "You're always such weird, dey. Come with us!"
Peter doesn't go. Hanif doesn't come back.

Everyone has a pattern. The part already made is easy, it comes to him whether or not he wants it. People get angry when he recalls something the pattern told him; he tries not to but he forgets so many times. People stop talking to him, but patterns never do.

The part not yet made is hard enough it hurts; his own hides from him. The not-yet pattern is hard because there are so many pieces, and they don't fit yet, and some of them don't happen, and some do but in the wrong way. Hanif goes to the creek and falls; Hanif doesn't go to the creek and no one falls. Hanif goes to the creek and falls and Vinni falls too, trying to help. Hanif doesn't go and Vinni falls.
So many pieces, and he likes Hanif, but Hanif doesn't understand.

Miz Vero drops her handscreen and it splinters and shatters; she is cussing under her breath while Peter stares at the broken web of plastic and electronic bits, a fixed canvas. Machines have a beautiful obvious pattern and he laughs. Miz Vero doesn't understand and assigns him toilet cleaning duties for a week and he just keeps laughing.

People patterns never stop talking but machine patterns never start, a vid versus a painting. He can't fix Miz Vero's old screen but he makes her new one better, rewrites the bad software, breaks through the chains so the pattern can stretch beyond and touch the other machine patterns.
He can't explain in a way she would understand; she adjusts his learning module and never asks him to clean toilets again.

In his dreams he sees one of the aliens, with ridges on her nose and tentacle-hair and blue-white skin. He dreams her and he dreams his own not-yet-pattern, sharp against his fingertips and blood pours from his wounds until he hasn't any left.
He screams himself awake and Vinni holds onto him but he can't explain, not to Vinni or himself, why he can't go with the blue lady.

Prodis Wayward doesn't ship in adoptions, so Peter is surprised when Miz Vero tells him someone has come for him. But he is being hired, his tech scores soar, and despite his youth a nice detana woman would like Peter to work for her, and would he like to meet her?
He says yes despite the rot in his stomach and is not surprised to meet the blue lady from his dream. She smiles and he feels pinpricks in his fingers. He agrees to the job; his pattern is clear and sharp, what choice is there?
