Notes: Luc le Cleric was originally one of the playmates for Prince Pierre (Anna's third child and only live son) and after he died he became the playmate of Prince Henri. Luc and Elisabeth were pretty close as children and they 'courted' as teens though no one really knows this. Ardiana was originally a maid of honor of Queen Therese but switched allegiance to the Everarts despite her Ibonian heritage.

Luc bowed to his mother.

The Dowager Baroness patted the sofa next to her. Luc reluctantly sat down next to her.

Ardiana le Cleric stared at her son. She always did. He looked nothing like her. He took after his Mondian father with bright blonde hair and clear blue eyes. Ardiana was dark while her husband had been fair. That’s what he’d liked about her.

“Have you thought more about we discussed previously?” Ardiana asked.

Luc clenched his teeth. Not this again.

“I am not ready to get married Mother,” he said.

“Luc, you are a man at twenty. Your father died a year ago and like him you are reckless. You need an heir.”

“Aunt Marie has many sons,” Luc said. “If I should die, the barony of Cail would pass to her sons.”

Ardiana looked shocked. “You’d let the barony, which has been ruled by the Clerics since the time of Michel, pass to the Deschamps?”

Luc allowed a small smile to grace his face. “Why not?”

Ardiana clamped her lips tightly.

“You have to get over that girl,” Ardiana said.

Luc looked away.

“She’s married Luc,” Ardiana started. “And even if she hadn’t been she’s way about your station in life. Princesses don’t marry barons.”

Luc sighed.

Ardiana smiled at her son.

“She belongs to her husband now,” Ardiana said.

Luc stood up. “She never belonged to me in the first place. Betha doesn’t belong to anyone. Not truly.”

“Luc,” Ardiana said reaching for his hand. He sidestepped her and left her study. Ardiana sighed. She knew it hurt him to talk about the girl, but he had to realize she was a lost cause.

Poor Luc, but his mother is right. It's not doing him any good to continue pining after a teenage love, especially after she's married. How does Elisabeth feel about him?

I'm kind of on both sides here-- Luc does need to move on, but at the same time, I can understand wanting to hang on to the memories.
