They say that bad things don’t happen to good people.

This is, of course, a complete lie, but then, most things they say are lies, Aaron knows. They’re polite fictions invented, ostensibly, for the purpose of comfort, but Aaron doesn’t believe that either. He’s seen enough to know that’s another lie, that these fictions are created much more for the purpose of ensuring that those who are under control remain under control. It’s much easier to hurt someone if they believe they deserve to be hurt, after all—and this is clever, he concedes, if somewhat lazy.

Evidence of this lie is everywhere: there’s the dark-haired woman with the husband who hits her; there’s the men slipping drugs into glasses, thinking they’re unseen; there’s someone purporting to be trustworthy, happily twisting that trust into fear.

They all think they’re invincible, all think that their actions won’t be discovered. They think their lies are enough. It’s adorable, in a way, because Aaron is so much better at lying.

Their deaths are satisfying, all fair game, and no one will miss them. He enjoys himself with each and every one, and it evens things out some.

Of course bad things happen to good people, but fortunately, he is not one of them.
