Kesshare is patient here because she pretty much has to be. I think one of her younger children (she and Kellom have somewhere between three and five, they're refusing to pin it down exactly for me) would be a better candidate, but she isn't going to alter the line of succession for them. Partly because she'd lose Kellom's support for her budding empire when he figured it out, partly because she has other plans for her other children that she doesn't want to sacrifice, and partly because, while Sorell won't be brilliant or expand things, he will keep things stable. And both Feredar and Glass (the former more dramatically) are coming of of succession crises/unstable periods, so a boring reign might be beneficial. It's not her ideal--she'd want a brilliant ruler who could both expand and keep things stable as her firstborn, but the advantages to dealing with a stable-but-merely-adequate heir as opposed to promoting a more brilliant one and risking instability are greater.

Now, if Sorell were outright incompetent, she'd look at the problem differently. He's just...average, reasonably competent, and with the right education, will be a decent-to-good monarch. Just not a great one.
