Flame #4, Fever Red #29, Ember #24
Name: shadowsong26
Story: Adequate
'Verse: Feredar
Colors: Flame #4. firewood, Fever Red #29. bed rest, Ember #24. Temper
Supplies and Materials: photography, eraser (Murder AU), brush (force majeure), watercolors, fabric, novelty beads (Is there something missing?), glue ("Fortunately, the current shift of energy will help to settle the dynamics of a relationship back down into a more manageable state of affairs. But first you must let go of your preconceived ideas and move willingly outside of your comfort zone")
Word Count: 356
Rating: R
Characters: Kesshare
Warnings: A distinct lack of maternal affection, references to familial murder
Notes: Constructive criticism welcome, as always. Apparently Kellom's oldest son is always named for his father, regardless of who the mother is.
Sorell was a perfectly adequate heir.
Kesshare monitored everything her children did, of course--some activities more discreetly than others, but she made it her business to know every detail of their lives. And her eldest son was perfectly adequate, and capable. Reasonably intelligent, though not brilliant, competent with his magic and mundane combat, though not likely to become famous for either, charming and well-liked, though not quite charismatic.
She had hoped for something better, particularly as she drew closer and closer to the final murder that would give her the empire she craved. But, then again, the boy's namesake had been hardly spectacular until forced to act, and her son would be far better prepared than his grandfather ever was. All of her children would be. Just in case. And Sorell IV had done extraordinary things with very little, and done his work quietly, for the most part. Flashy brilliance wasn't always what was necessary, and if Sorell-her-son didn't quite show the type of dedication and attention to detail that had made his grandfather more than competent...
Perhaps there was brilliance lurking behind Sorell's perfectly adequate surface. And perhaps there wouldn't be a need for that hard luster after she laid the groundwork. Sorell may be merely adequate, but he could hold things together, Kesshare was reasonably confident of that. With the right education and a certain amount of experience, and the respect that maturity would grant him, Sorell would go down in history as a good ruler, one who reigned with dignity and grace, if lacking a little in other areas. He would be leather, strong but soft, holding things together rather than pushing forward; a ruler likened to the quiet warmth of hearth and home, rather than bright sunlight and blazed trails. But so long as he didn't fail, Kesshare could live with decent. Someone brighter would come along, perhaps in the next generation, perhaps the one after, to continue her work.
Her son may not be ideal, or the heir she would have designed for her empire if she could command such things, but there were far worse things to be than adequate.
