Notes: Charlotte is about 40 in this and has been married to Jean Luc for twenty three years. Josefine is married to a Charbonneau who were once the ruling family of Monde before the direct line died out with Matilide. Mench is a term for one of the original peoples that lived in the kingdom of Seycle in ancient times. The capital is named after another tribe (the Morelessi).

“We love you, Queen Marie!” The crowds called out to the passing carriage.

Marie waved eagerly at them. These were her people now. She would take care of them and she knew that they would protect her. That's what the Mench did.

“You're glowing,” Jehann said leaning against her.

Marie laid her head on his shoulder. Was this what happiness was? Was this what she had prayed for all those years ago?

“I can't believe this is happening,” Marie said softly.

Jehann chuckled. “And why not?”

“Henri, God Above bless his soul, was meant to be king. I've known that since he was born. I really didn't have a chance to become regnant in my own right.”

“For fifteen years you were your Father's heir, Marie.”

“Yes, I know. But nobody thought I'd succeed. There hasn't been a Queen Regnant since Matilide.”

Jehann kissed her head. “They are fools. You were born to rule and so you shall.”

Marie smiled and kissed his chin. “So I shall.”

“Why have I been called here?” Charlotte asked to the person standing by the window. She couldn't make out who it was. But she thought they may have been female.

“Lady Charlotte Everart of Cadomiselle, Countess of Verste,” they said. They were definitely female.

“Yes,” Charlotte said confused.

The person turned around. She was of medium height and her body was ample.

The woman smiled at her.

“I'm Josefine Charbonneau, Mistress of the Robes for he Queen.”

“Oh,” Charlotte said slightly unnerved.

“Please sit,” Josefine said cheerfully.

Charlotte sat down in the plush dark blue chair. Josefine sat down behind the sturdy wood desk.

“I've heard good things about you, Lady Charlotte,” Josefine said.

Charlotte allowed herself a small smile. She waited for Josefine to continue.

“The Queen Dowager was quiet sad to be parted from your services when she married,” Josefine said.
Charlotte nodded. “I do very much miss working for Queen Cosette.”

“Of course. My lady, the new Queen, has asked my help in assembling her new household. Queen Cosette recommended you highly.”

“Oh wow,” Charlotte said surprised. She hadn't been the closest to the Queen. But she had enjoyed spending time with her.

“Queen Marie humbly requests your service,” Josefine said.

“Oh I-”

“She will reward you handsomely,” Josefine said with a light tilt to her voice.

“I would love to, but my family...”

“Your eldest is a man of 22 is he not?”

“Yes,” Charlotte said quietly.

“Lady Charlotte, the Queen has no vendetta against the Everarts. After all, her sisters are of the Everart bloodline. She wants the best and you are the best, are you not?”

Charlotte blushed. “I'm not the best.”

Josefine laughed. “It's okay to be proud when it's the truth, Lady Charlotte. Remember that.”

Charlotte smiled at Josefine. She couldn't help but notice that she was exceedingly pretty.

“So what shall I tell the Queen?” Josefine asked.

Charlotte weighed her options. She loved working for the royals. It gave her something more to do than sit at Jean Luc's estates and run them. She didn't even do that really, the Duchess took care of it. And Josefine was right. Her youngest was ten. Perhaps she could arrange for Clarrise to be a playmate to the twin princesses?

“Tell her I would be greatly honored,” Charlotte said earnestly.

Josefine smiled brightly.

“It'll be nice getting to know you, Lady Charlotte.”

Charlotte smiled. “You as well, Lady Josefine.”
