"I HATE YOU!" Nida shrieked at her big sister, before slamming the door and stomping out into the gardens, in impotent, hysterical rage.
She flopped by her favorite flowerbed in a storm of tears.
:Why are you crying, pretty one?:
"'Cause lessons didn't make sense today and everything was confusing and stupid Rema was being a meanyhead and I just wanna run away forever and ever and ever and..." She turned towards the warm voice and buried her face in a soft, silky coat.
:Shh,: the voice replied, somehow managing to sound amused but not eye-rolly the way Lena always did when she thought Nida was being silly. :Feel better now?:
Nida pouted. "My head hurts."
:That happens when you cry so much,: the voice pointed out, warm and practical and maternal, and she looked up--which Papa would prob'ly yell at her for crying at a nice voice without seeing who it belonged to.
It belonged to a pretty, chestnut-brown horse with wings shading from the same color as the coat to almost gold at the tips. "Ooooh!" she breathed, delighted.
:My name is Dovia, pretty one,: the pegasus told her. :If you'd like, I'll stay with you forever.:
Well, that didn't take much thought. Nida might be only six and not as smart as her sisters, but when a pretty lady pegasus came up and offered to fly you away into happy times even if the away part wasn't actually there, only really stupid people said no.
Nida launched up to hug Dovia's neck so fast she ripped her skirt, and Dovia laughed, warm and maternal, in her head, and Nida wasn't quite so mad at Rema anymore.

"What do you think?" Ineku asked softly.
:She fascinates you,: Sshelin said from her bedding in the corner. :But I don't like her.:
"I know," Ineku said. "I know." He sighed, and sat down next to his canticore, running a hand along one of her horns. "And yet..."
:You wouldn't be happy with anyone else.: Sshelin sounded resigned, more than anything.
"No," Ineku agreed. "I wouldn't."
:And you want kids of your own, so you must marry.:
He nodded, wordlessly. "Will you..."
:Yes?:
"...if I say yes...will you still love me?"
Sshelin just stared at him for a long moment, then butted him lightly. :Don't be stupid.:
"Will you forgive me?" Ineku rephrased.
:I don't have to like your wife, Ineku,: Sshelin said. :I love you, and I want you to be happy. If she will make you happy, there is nothing to forgive.:
"Thank you," Ineku whispered, and he stayed curled up with her for a long time before rising to answer Kesshare's letter.

Dallu came home, still tingling from his lesson, and Kesu gave him a baleful look.
:Stay away from me 'til you work that out, I hate it when you make my fur do weird things.:
Dallu laughed, but it was an easy enough task to dispel his lingering static before he went and embraced his bear. "They're thinking I might be a navigator. I'm not called yet, of course, but wouldn't that be exciting?"
:It'll be hot,: Kesu pointed out.
He rolled his eyes and stuck his tongue out. "Spoilsport."
Kesu lumbered to his legs and rubbed his head against Dallu, :I'm the practical one, here. You always have your head in the clouds.:
"You say that like it's a bad thing."
:I do not!: Kesu protested, leaning into Dallu's stroking hands. :I just want you to be ready for everything that'll come with leaving the ice. Good and bad.:
"I know, I know," Dallu said, and kissed the top of the bear's head. "But it's nice to think about, isn't it? Even the unreal fantasy of it."
Wordlessly, Kesu conceded the point, and Dallu curled against his bear, more glad than he could express that he'd been blessed with such a wonderful companion.

It took Derin's agonized shrieking finally penetrating deep into his head to get Mel to stop his panicked flight from the town, and it was only then he realized that his friend had been keeping up an increasingly panicked dialogue in the back of his mind ever since he started.
And that Derin, bound to the water by his fish half, could not follow him.
"I'm sorry," Mel gasped, turning towards the sense of Derin in his mind. "I'm sorry, I didn't...I just had to..."
:Don't leave me,: the hippocampus whimpered into his head, and Mel knew he couldn't run, he'd have to figure something out.
Or, well, he could run, but he had to stay close to the water.
"I won't. I won't, I'm sorry, I'm coming back..." He scrambled back to the beach as fast as he could, praying he wasn't visible from the Eagle, and Derin was half on the beach, hooves buried in the sand.
Derin pressed his head into Mel's side. :Don't ever leave me again.:
"I won't," Mel whispered, wrapping his arms around his companion's neck. "I promise."

:Hello,: something chirped, waking Isshiri up all at once.
"Mmph...?" he asked, eloquently, one eye sliding open.
There was a tiny blush-colored dragon curled up on his chest, watching him with bright eyes and twitching tail. :Hello!: she repeated.
Isshiri sat bolt upright, which made the baby dragon almost fall off him with a frantic screech, until she dug her claws in, pricking his chest, to stay.
:That was mean:, she complained.
"I...I'm sorry, I...I thought you were a dream at first."
The dragon rolled her eyes. :Don't be silly. If I was a dream, you'd be asleep and I wouldn't have had to wake you up.:
"But if you were a dream, would I realize I was asleep?" Isshiri asked.
The baby dragon stared at him. :...you think too much when you're sleepy. It's weird on you.:
Isshiri grinned. "S'pose not. So...um...is this how...?"
:Yep!: she said, all annoyance gone. She extracted herself from his shirt and licked the little clawmarks. :Sorry about that, but you almost made me fall, so I had to.:
"I'll get them cleaned up later," Isshiri promised. Carefully--so carefully, she couldn't be more than a couple months old, she fit into his arms like a housecat--he scooped up the blush dragon and cradled her against his chest.
This pleased her, and she, again like a cat, made a soft purring noise. :I'm yours and your mine forever an' ever an' ever.:
Isshiri liked the sound of that. He liked it very, very much.

With Tassher perched on her shoulder, Riluke studied the white-sand beach approaching her. "It'll be nice to be able to balance again," she said, softly.
The phoenix chirred a little laugh. :Earth-mages have it worse. Count yourself lucky.:
Riluke nodded in agreement, and leaned against the heat of her partner's body. "...is this why you chose me? Did you know this would happen?"
Tassher was silent for a moment. :It doesn't work like that, exactly,: he said. :But...you were trapped in your egg in the City of Glass. Something would have to give, for you to flare up and meet your full potential.:
Which was probably the clearest answer anyone ever got from a bonded creature, as to how and why they sought their humans out.
Tassher laughed again. :From what I understand, few humans think to ask.:
"I suppose I am more inquisitive than most," Riluke admitted. "Except Isshiri."
:Your cousin asks different questions,: Tassher said dismissively.
"True."
They could see people moving on the beach now. They'd be arriving soon.
:Enjoy your rebirth, Riluke,: Tassher said, then Riluke felt a pressure on her shoulder as he took off, soaring ahead to see what the Islands had to offer them.

The wind whipped at Kellom's eyes and hair as he and Vitria soared over the wall, scouting for weaknesses in the enemy lines.
Father said he shouldn't be out here, it was too great a risk, but Vitria was swifter than Father knew. Kellom hadn't come to grief yet.
:There,: Vitria said, shifting her wings to angle towards the line. :Order a strike there.:
He picked up his spyglass--even with Vitria's help, he couldn't quite see what the giant eagle meant without one--and he studied where she indicated. "Yes, that will do," he said. Fortunately, he didn't need to shout over the rushing wind to make himself heard. One of the perks of bonding, even if he never could get the hang of simple telepathy.
:We should return, before we're spotted.:
"I agree," he said, and shifted position low over her wing-joints, to interfere as little as possible with her steering. There was no need to guide her. Vitria knew the way home.

The hardest part of defecting--apart from the actual decision-making part, anyway--was finding a way to sneak Indar out. Because like hell was Andrell leaving his hippogriff behind, where Indar could be hurt or imprisoned or--
:I don't think even Tana would dare lure you back that way,: Indar insisted for the umpteenth time.
:Do you want me to leave you behind?:
Indar didn't have to answer that.
Not that Andrell would have left him, even if there were no danger--it would be like an open wound in his heart, deeper and more painful the longer and farther the separationg got. He couldn't deal with that on top of everything else tearing through his mind right now.
Andrell took a deep breath, and covered Indar's eagle head as best he could. :Okay. Okay, it's dark enough, they should mistake you for a regular horse, and I can be your eyes...:
:I don't like this,: Indar said, shifting nervously.
Andrell stroked him softly, trying to calm him. :It would be worse if we got caught, and you're the only hippogriff in the city.:
Indar made a faint distressed noise, but nodded, pressing his face into Andrell's shoulder.
Andrell mounted in a smooth, practiced motion. :We'll be all right. Start walking, I'll tell you when to turn.:
Distress in a keen layer over all of his thoughts, Indar did as his human asked.

Kes slid into the water, feeling Ahniya glide smoothly through the water to encircle her.
:It's not as bad as you think,: Ahniya attempted to reassure her.
"Is," Kes said, bleakly, sliding a hand down along Ahniya's long body and feeling her tail gently wind around her wrist in an embrace. "Taz hates me."
:She would've died if you hadn't pulled her out.:
"She wanted to."
:Not really,: Ahniya insisted, pressing her triangular head into Kes's chest. :If she had, she would've pushed harder to get away from you.:
"I suppose..." Kes said, but she doubted it.
The trouble with being bonded to a sea serpent was they were very hard to escape their coils when they had a point to make. :No supposing,: Ahniya said. :It is truth. She's angry now, but she will forgive you, I know it.:
Kes didn't try to argue again, just stroked Ahniya and tried to believe.
She could tell, though, that Ahniya could sense her lingering doubts.

:Because I have aaaaaall of this,: the sea-wolf proclaimed, rolling his back to turn the clinging into a scratch, :And you only have skin and borrowed fur.:
Taz laughed. "I have you and Dallu to keep me warm."
Lutin's tail thumped against her leg. :Always, love,: he said. :And I can promise to keep you warm forever.: He licked her chin, and she smiled.
"'Course, darlin'," she said. "I know that."
:And you'll get used to the cold in time,: he said, rolling over so she could scratch his belly, landing so he was almost-but-not-quite on top of her feet--warm, but not crushing her with his weight.
"Yeah," she said. "It's already better'n last year."
:So stop whining,: Lutin said, giving her a tongue-lolling canine grin. :And scratch higher.:
Laughing again, Taz obliged.
