I think this is honestly the happiest ending he's going to get. I know he never kicks the drinking habit, although he manages to become a much more functioning alcoholic than he is for most of this story. But I also know he stays with Lauren for the rest of his life, and while it's kind of a weird and antagonistic relationship, it's one that genuinely helps both of them and makes their lives better. So. *shrugs* Sometimes things work.
