Name: Destiny
Story: The Mondian Chronicles (Archive/Index/Timelines)
Title: Deal or No Deal
Timeline: 1130 AW
Colors: Fire Opal 16: And got no peace
Supplies and Styles: None
Word Count: 413
Summary: Her brother was five and twenty yet he still hadn't grown out of whining.
Rating: PG
Warnings: Implied adultery, though nothing is depicted.
Notes: Noelle is about nineteen in this and as she mentions Marc is 25. They are the children of a minor lord and his wife. Neither of them are particularly important at court just yet.
“Have you thought more about it?” Her brother asked eagerly.
Noelle sighed loudly. Marc had been badgering her about this for two weeks now. She didn’t have the heart to tell him that she wasn’t any closer to accepting the King’s offer now than she was when he’d first asked her.
“I don’t think I’m going to accept,” Noelle said lightly.
A shocked look crossed Marc’s face. He sat down next to her.
“But why?”
Noelle rolled her eyes. Her brother was five and twenty yet he hadn’t grown out of whining. She smiled ruefully at him.
“I don’t fancy myself being a man’s plaything. No matter if the man is the King of all Monde.”
Marc put his arm around his younger sister’s shoulder. “Think about it, Noelle. You’d have everything you ever wanted.”
Noelle slung off his arm. “Yes, everything except a husband.”
“Why wouldn’t you still be able to have a husband?”
“What man wants leftover goods?”
Marc frowned. “Don’t think of yourself like that, Noelle. You are beautiful. Any man would be lucky to have you and even the King knows it.”
“I’m not accepting, Marc,” Noelle said firmly.
Marc threw up his hands. “You’ll make us enemies of the King?”
“We aren’t prestigious enough to be enemies of the King,” Noelle said.
“Apparently we are enough to get you your position with the Queen.”
Noelle blushed slightly. “I’m a junior maid of honor. I barely interact with the Queen.”
Marc stared at her. “Is that why you won’t accept? You don’t want the Queen as your enemy?”
“It’s not that,” Noelle said too quickly.
“That is it. Noelle, Queen Analise is a royal. She was born a royal. She knows her duty better than anyone else.”
Noelle continued to look down.
Marc sighed and stood up. He turned his back on her.
“I won’t force the issue on you. I suppose we’ll have to deal accordingly with the consequences.”
“I’m sorry, Marc,” she said truthfully.
Marc turned and smiled at her then. They looked so much alike with their dark brown hair and chocolate brown eyes. Marc was her other half. She was sorry to disappoint him.
“It’s alright, sweet sister.”
He bent down and kissed her forehead. She sighed as he pulled away.
“I’ll let you get back to the Queen,” he said walking to the door.
“Goodbye,” she called to him.
He waved and then shut the door behind him leaving her alone with her thoughts.
