To the mods: May I please have a tag for soot? :D
“Diana has started to ask questions about her mother.”
Jean Luc raised a dark eyebrow but waited for his cousin to speak.
Alexandrine shook her mass of blonde curls and straightened up.
“The other day while I was asking her about her lessons, she turned to me and said ‘You’re my maman’s sister. But where’s maman?”
Jean Luc sighed deeply. “What are you planning to say?”
Alexandrine threw up her hands. “I don’t know. What should I say? The King doesn’t like anyone to mention Martine-“
“He’s still sore I see,” Jean Luc interrupted.
“And it would be awkward explaining to her why she’s not around anymore. I mean how do you tell a child that age that their parent is dead?”
“How indeed?” Jean Luc said.
They were both quiet. Alexandrine played with the folds of her simple gown and Jean Luc tapped his fingers against the chair he was sitting in.
“I haven’t asked how you are, Drina,” Jean Luc said.
Alexandrine smiled shyly. “Don’t worry too much about me, Luca. I’m fine, always have been, always will be.”
“You should be married by now.”
“My duty is to the children. Martine bade me to take care of them and I intend to keep my promise to her,” Alexandrine said softly.
“You are a good sister.”
“You are a good cousin,” Alexandrine said.
Jean Luc stood. “The children won’t need taking care of forever, Drina. What are you going to do then? When are you going to take time for yourself?”
Alexandrine stood as well. “Perhaps I shall enter a convent? That would squash those frivolous traits out of me.”
Jean Luc grinned. “You aren’t frivolous; you’re the furthest thing from it.”
Alexandrine kissed his cheek. “Goodbye.”
Jean Luc kissed her forehead. “Take care, Drina.”
He left then. Alexandrine walked to the window, though her eyes didn’t see the scene before her. She didn’t want to think about when the children grew up. She had dedicated her life to them. She feared that without them she’d lose her purpose and then what? Who would she be then? She didn’t want to find out.
