Summary: After honor a soldier for his work in the Mondian-Aleshian War, Henri and his mistress get into a disagreement.
Rating: PG
Warnings: Henri is a total ass in this.
Notes: Noelle has been Henri's major mistress since 1131 AW when he was married to Analise of Konte. They have five sons together. Henri has kept Noelle by his side through the war.
“As a service to your country and your exemplary performance in battle, I am promoting to the rank of Major General.”
A huge grin spread on Cesar Bonnette’s face. His fellow soldiers clapped and slapped his back and shoulders.
“You are a service to your country,” Mademoiselle de Valles said in a clear voice beside King Henri.
Cesar blushed slightly at her words.
“How’s about you give the general a kiss?” A man said loudly behind them.
Applause broke out. Cesar tried to keep a straight face, but it was hard. Everyone knew that Noelle de Valles was the king’s long time maitress majeur and she wasn’t to be trifled with.
Noelle smiled.
“With His Majesty’s permission, I’ll gladly give a kiss to the protector of our great country.”
Henri’s face was unreadable as he spoke.
“I would never deny a man the kiss of a beautiful woman,” Henri said tightly.
Noelle smiled. She stepped forward and pressed a gentle kiss against Cesar’s slightly stubbly cheek. She pulled back and grinned.
“Back to your assignments,” Henri said loudly.
Everyone went in separate directions. Henri and Noelle headed towards his lodgings, while the soldiers went off to prepare for the upcoming battle. Only Cesar was left behind.
He rubbed the cheek Noelle had kissed.
“Wow.”

“You shouldn’t have agreed to kiss him,” Henri said grumpily.
Noelle grinned. “What would it have looked like if I refused him? He kept the Aleshians from crossing into our territory.”
Henri grumbled something unintelligible.
Noelle came to sit down next to him. Henri kept shooting glances at her.
“I doubt my features have changed since the last time you looked at me,” Noelle said kissing his ear.
Henri sighed and stood up. He walked away from her.
“You flirt too much.”
“I thought that was what you liked about me. I remember you told me I had more gaiety to me than your queen.”
“I was younger then and I liked that sort of thing.”
“Not as young as I,” Noelle reminded him.
Henri turned then.
“You remind me of them,” Henri said tightly.
“Ah,” Noelle said. “Therein lies the problem.”
“I won’t tolerate being made a fool of, Noelle.”
She smiled. “Who could make a fool of the greatest man in the Kingdom of Bronde?”
“Don’t tease me,” Henri said quietly.
“But it’s so much fun!”
“Be careful, Noelle. You are a simple lord’s daughter and I have given you everything. I can take it all away.”
Noelle’s smiled faltered slightly.
They stared at each other for a long time.
“I’ll be sending you back to the capital in a few days,” Henri said finally.
“Why?”
“A woman in your condition shouldn’t be here.”
“I gave birth to Christophe away from Morelessa and he’s fine. Besides who will keep you company?”
“You needn’t worry about that.”
Noelle stood.
There was no use in trying to argue with him. His moods had grown worse since she first met him some five years ago. She’d return to the capital and give him his breathing room, but she knew he would always return. That at least was a constant in her life.
