“I can’t believe her audacity,” Thomas growled.

Gilles put his hand on his brother’s shoulder. “Peace be, brother. The king will…he will heal.”

Thomas threw off Gilles’s hand and turned sharply on him.

“Do you think I give a fig about him healing? She’s endangered everything I’ve worked to build in less than two years! Who will replace her at his royal side?”

Gilles ran his hand through his dirty blonde hair. He turned away from his brother. He had an idea about a woman that would suit His Majesty, but there was a problem.

He wanted her for himself.

Gilles sat across from the girl. She still looked young, but over the past year she looked weary.

“Why did you do it, Your Majesty?”

Martine sighed deeply and leaned forward against the wooden table.

“Have you ever been in love, my lord?”

“What?” Gilles asked surprised.

“Love? It’s such a fickle thing, yet we all chase it. I chased it and I found it.”

“But at what price? You know the penalty for this.”

She smiled softly.

“I know and I took the chance anyway. But if I could, I wouldn’t change it. I’d always take the chance.”

Gilles closed the door to the room behind him.

“Did she confess?” Thomas asked.

“Did she really need to confess? We have all the evidence we need, we have the witnesses.”

Thomas popped his knuckles.

“The King still wants to believe she is innocent. That Valles seduced her.”

Gilles shook his head. “I get the feeling the so called seduction was mutually beneficial. You know about the boy right? This isn’t something new.”

Thomas clenched his hands into fist.

“I should have picked a better lady. One who knew how to play her role.”

“I know someone,” Gilles said.

“Who?”

“The Lady Sohmes,” Gilles said in a clear voice.

Thomas looked at his brother skeptically.

“Why would His Majesty be interested in a widow?”

“The Princess Analise was a widow when she married him, if you recall,” Gilles said testily.

“Yes, but she was a royal widow with a slightly impressive dowry.”

Gilles sighed.

“Lady Sohmes would be perfect. She’s more educated than the Queen and she’s humble. She’ll know her place and she has a…strange beauty I think he’d like.”

Thomas eyed Gilles suspiciously.

“Well done brother, you’re getting very adept at playing this game of ours.”

“It’s been so long since you’ve been to see me,” she murmured against her chest.

Gilles rubbed her long strawberry blonde hair.

“His Majesty needs me and I can’t travel from court in a day.”

Cosette smiled and stepped back to get a better look at him.

“What’s wrong?”

Gilles looked into her clear blue eyes. She was worried about him, he could sense it.

“Cosette, you’ve heard the latest from the capital, I take it?”

“Gossip knows no bounds, Gilles,” she said smiling slightly.

Gilles took her hand.

“How would you like to go to court, my dear?”
