Amber

They're thirteen, and they think they're sooooo grown-up, playing Spin the Bottle in Amber's garage; when Amber lands on Mariko, they both go bright red, and their lips touch for the barest of moments, and somehow they end up dating for three weeks after that, which is forever when you're in year seven.

Jo

Jo is her first serious girlfriend, an obscenely wealthy but very sweet former child actress that somehow goes to Mariko's high school; their first kiss is anticipated and heated, and Mariko's first with an open mouth, and it tastes weird, like acid and coffee, and Mariko isn't really sure she likes it.

Teri

Mariko dated Teri for a whirlwind four months during her wild year between graduating and University, the year where she refused to listen to anything her parents said, and Teri had a bright red mohawk and eyes the color of evergreens, and a tongue stud that accidentally cut Mariko's tongue when they kissed.

Leyla

Leyla, she dated for almost six years--all the way through 'til she got her Ph.D--and she doesn't actually remember the first time she kissed her; only the last, when she left Australia and Earth behind for the stars and all the languages they had to offer.

Lux

The first kiss with Lux isn't awkward at all, despite the hesitations Mariko had on account of the difference in their species; it feels perfect, their lips touching, then sliding open at just the right tempo, exploring with exquisite grace the secrets they have to offer each other--they fit together so perfectly together, and Mariko begins to realize that she's falling in love.
