Notes: Theresa is Therese's birth name. At this point in the story, she hasn't changed her name yet. Isabelle and Elisabeth are related through Isabelle's elder sister (Frederica of Bador) who in turn was Elisabeth's mother. Isabelle is about 62, Elisabeth is about 34, Henri is about 18, Theresa is about 24, and Jean XI is about 46.
Theresa followed the two queens down the hall. Beside their footsteps everything was quiet, which worried her, even though it shouldn’t have.
The two queens in question were the Queen Dowager, Isabelle and her daughter in law, Queen Elisabeth. They both resembled each other seeing as Elisabeth was the dowager’s niece through her elder sister.
Theresa took a deep breath. Everything would be okay. This was her destiny.
The two queens stopped at a door. Elisabeth stepped back and let the dowager led them inside. Elisabeth motioned to her.
Theresa walked forward and found herself in a large room. The wallpaper was light blue with embroidered roses. On the walls were portraits of what she assumed were members of the Mondian royal family.
“Henri, come forward and say hello to your wife,” the dowager said.
Theresa turned and found herself face to face with a boy.
No, that wasn’t correct. The boy before her wasn’t exactly a boy. He was tall, being at least seven inches taller than she. His head was free of covering and his hair was golden blonde. His eyes were a light blue and he lips were full. This was him, her future husband, her king.
“Hello, Your Highness,” Theresa said softly curtseying to him.
He bent over her hand. “It’s a pleasure to meet you.”
He kissed her hand before releasing it and standing to his full height again. They stared at each other.
“Henri, invite her in,” a stern voice said.
Theresa turned in the direction of the voice. She saw a man with jet black hair and the same eyes as Henri. He had a slight tan and he was thicker than Henri. He had a certain aura about him. This must be the king.
“Of course, Father,” Henri said softly. He offered his arm to her and she took it.
They walked a little ways to the middle of the room were the couches were. Henri offered her a seat on the one opposite his father and he sat down next to her.
Theresa found herself face to face with the King of Monde. His eyes bore into hers and she lowered them quickly.
“She’s just as beautiful as the portrait would leave you to believe. You think so, don’t you son?”
“Yes Father,” Henri said quickly.
Jean smiled. “Of course Mother will arrange her rooms and the things for her household.”
“Yes, of course de-,” Isabelle started but she was interrupted by Elisabeth.
“I thought I’d do that actually,” Elisabeth said softly.
“Oh don’t be silly, Lisbet,” Isabelle said putting her hand on her son’s shoulder. “I’ll do it. I arranged everything for both my sons’ wives.”
Theresa watched her future mother in law. Elisabeth’s hands were gripped in her gown, but she had a pleasant smile upon her face.
“Yes, but Henri is my son, Isabelle. I would like to do it.”
Theresa felt Henri move beside her. She turned her head slightly and saw that he was determinedly looking away from the two women.
“Lisbet, I assure you I can handle it. You should be worried about your wifely duties.”
“Mother!” Jean said with a firm voice.
“I’ve done my duty, Your Majesty,” Elisabeth said. “And my husband fortunately agrees with me.”
Isabelle sucked in breath. She looked to her son, but the king held up his hands. Elisabeth smiled and Theresa was struck at her young she looked.
“If you’ll come with me, my dear,” Elisabeth said standing up. Theresa stood up as well.
“I’ll see you at dinner,” Elisabeth said to Henri.
Henri nodded. “Yes ma’am.”
She smiled and turned away. Theresa took one last look at the scene before following the queen out of the receiving room.
