Notes: The month is Nouvre and it's the second week of the New Year of 1120. Jean Luc is the elder brother of Anna Everart, second queen to Henri I of Monde. Beside the title handed down to him by his father (Lord Cadomiselle or Lord Selle less formally), he is also known by the title of Count of Verste, which was granted to him by Henri. Thus Charlotte becomes the Countess. Charlotte is from Aube, a county in Monde.
Charlotte leaned against the carriage window.
They were headed towards La Maison Rouge, the traditional home of the eldest of the Duke of Cadomiselle's sons.
“I haven't really lived here before,” Jean Luc said across from her.
Charlotte nodded, but didn't say anything.
“I have a home in the capital where I usually stay, but Father thinks it's time I make my own imprint upon the manor.”
The carriage was quiet.
“You can decorate it any way you'd like,” Jean Luc said leaning forward. “Spare no expense.”
Charlotte continued to look out the window.
“You're very quiet,” Jean Luc observed.
She looked at him. “I've always been a quiet person.”
“Your father didn't mention that. You were quiet at the wedding, though I thought it was just the jitters.”
“I wasn't jittery,” she said simply.
Jean Luc smiled.
“I hope you won't miss Aube,” Jean Luc started. “Cadmoiselle has a lot of vineyards. I don't suppose Aube does? I don't recall seeing any when I visited with your father.”
“We have a few. But not on my father's estate.”
They were quiet as the carriage moved on.
Jean Luc peered out the window. “We're almost there. I can see the red chimneys from here.”
Charlotte looked out the window though she didn't see anything. They had married a week ago in Aube. She could barely remember any of it. Her mother hadn't attended, though she didn't really expect her to.
“We're here,” Jean Luc said as the carriage rolled to a stop. The footmen jumped off the back and hurried to open the door.
Jean Luc held out his hand. She took it and stepped down the steps. She looked around. The manor was huge. It was about the same size of her father's main estate. She shook her head. The Everarts were really...rich. No wonder her father had eagerly accepted Jean Luc's offer for her hand.
Jean Luc offered his arm. She laced hers under his and they begin to walk up the path.
“My mother will be out to visit us soon,” Jean Luc said. “She's anxious to meet you.”
“And your father?”
“He's in the capital seeing to things with His Majesty and Anna.”
Charlotte was quiet. She had never met Anna. She hadn't heard a lot about her, but out in the country, news traveled slower.
“Is your sister married now?”
Jean Luc nodded. “Yes and she's expecting.”
Charlotte raised her eyebrows in dull surprise but didn't say anything. She remembered that the whole Great Situation had started over His Majesty's lack of a son. Of course he'd be hasty to consummate the relationship.
“Welcome home, my lord,” a slighter older man said when they stepped inside.
“If you can call it home,” Jean Luc teasingly.
The man smiled and then looked at Charlotte.
“Should I have someone show her ladyship to her quarters?”
“Yes. I'll be in the study.”
The man nodded and walked out of the hall.
Jean Luc turned to Charlotte.
“You can look around all you want. This is your home now.”
Charlotte nodded. Jean Luc smiled slightly before kissing her hand. He went in the opposite direction of his employ.
Charlotte looked around. The place was kind of drafty. There weren't many portraits around and she could see dust in places. But it wasn't bad.
“My lady?” A woman's voice asked behind her.
Charlotte turned around and saw a young woman standing behind her.
“I'm to show you to your quarters.”
Charlotte tried to smile, but she couldn't mold her lips into it. So she nodded instead. The woman took her up the stairs.
Charlotte followed behind at a slower pace.
She was married. She was the King's sister by law. She sighed. She guessed she would get used to it. At least she hoped she did.
