Notes: Colette is the wife of Gilles de Caulmont. Dorothee is the wife of Thomas de Caulmont and the future Countess of Sudme. Both brothers are related to King Henri, through their sister's marriage and are the uncles of her only child, Prince Henri, Prince of Norme and heir to the throne. The King is currently married to Cosette who Gilles was interested in before his marriage to Colette. This piece follows this one and will definitely make more sense after reading it.
“You must not tell anyone, dear sister,” Colette said.
Dorothee nodded.
Colette sighed. “I do not know why I protect him, Dot. It is treason to even think about committing treason.”
“What exactly did he do?”
Colette took a deep breath. “I found a letter in his desk. He was writing to the Queen. He talked of a rendezvous.”
“Oh sweet mother above,” Dorothee said.
“I mean technically he hasn't done anything wrong. I don't think he's had any improper contact with the Queen. But he...he intended to renew his relationship with her. We all know what happened to the previous men who dared to try to cuckold His Majesty.”
Dorothee nodded.
“But he didn't send it. He must have had a second thought. His script was hasty as if he had written it in a moment of passion.”
“Colette, how do you feel about this?”
Colette smiled and reached for Dorothee's hand. “You are such an angel, Dot.”
Dorothee smiled demurely. “How do you feel, dear?”
“I want to kill him. He..he has never told me he loved me. But he hasn't taken a mistress like I expected him to when we married. I had hoped that he felt the same way I do about him. But he has played me for a fool, Dot. And what's worse, I still love him. God Above help me, I still love him. I love him even though he loves someone else.”
Dorothee nodded. “The Caulmonts...are a very strange family.”
Colette didn't say anything. She stared out the window.
“I thought of asking for a meeting with His Majesty. I'd show him the letter. I felt that petty. I want revenge, Dot. But I have my children to think of. Our family would be disgraced and they'd seize his properties and we would be left with nothing. But I thought of it, Dot. I considered it. I'm still considering it. He should pay...for the hurt he has caused me.”
“Coco, I know it's hard and I know you want revenge. But he didn't send the letter. He regained his senses. He may not love you like you want him to love you. But he cares about you. You are the mother of his children. You're his family and he cares about all your children. That...is rare in a man these days. He's...” Dorothee trailed off.
“I know he's a good man,” Colette said looking down at her hands. “But he doesn't love me and that kills me. He would have married her, Dot. He said so himself.”
“But he didn't. For whatever reason, he married you. The two of you are bond together. He's yours, not hers.”
Colette nodded. “I suppose I should be happy with that.”
Dorothee touched her shoulder. Colette looked up.
“You shouldn't be happy with that. But you'll have to be content with it.”
Colette sighed. “You are very wise, Dot.”
Dorothee smiled. “So are you, Coco. Even if you don't think so.”
“Look at us, the Wise Caulmonts. Do you think one day they'll write about our wisdom?”
“No,” Dorthee said. “We're just the wives of the King's brothers by law. They'll write about them, not us.”
Colette frowned but didn't say anything else.
