Stella yawned as she listened to Lilian drown on.
“Stella!” Lilian said shaking her.
“Huh?” Stella said coming back to Earth.
“Are you even listening to me, Stella? This is a really important letter that I want you to dictate.”
Stella nodded. “Go ahead, I'm listening.”
Lilian smiled. Her teeth were pearly white and perfectly straight. Stella wondered how such a thing had happened.
“Alright,” Lilian said clasping her hands together. “Dearest Walter. You know I love you more than anything is this world. But due to other circumstances, I must turn down your proposal. My father simply will not allow me to marry you. I truly hope that you find someone who loves you as much as I do and that you will be happy. Got that?”
Stella smirked as she typed. Lilian was such a drama queen, but for the past two months she had been her personal secretary, she found herself liking the girl.
Lilian sighed and plopped down on a plush ruby couch next to the desk.
“It's so hard being me, Stella,” she said.
“Why's that?”
“Because everyone has such high expectations for me,” Lilian said pouting. “You have it easier, I bet.”
Stella didn't say anything just looked at her.
“How do your parents feel about you working here?”
“My parents support me in all my endeavors,” Stella said looking Lilian straight in the eye.
She grinned. “Really Stella? Even that crackpot idea you have of being an artist's model?”
“How did you...?”
“You mentioned it when you came for the interview, of course!”
“Ah,” Stella said. She had forgotten all about that stressful interview.
“My parents would never allow me to be an artist's model,” Lilian said lounging back. “My father says it's inappropriate.”
Stella raised her eyebrows but didn't say anything.
“And besides you'd have to go to one of the bigger cities for that kind of thing, wouldn't you?”
“I suppose.”
Lilian smiled.
“Is there anymore that you need me to do?” Stella asked.
Lilian stood up. “No, I don't think so. You can go home now.”
Stella stood up as well. “I'll see you tomorrow then?”
Lilian nodded. “Yes, of course, Stella dear.”
Stella nodded before walking out Lilian's study and through the big house. She said goodbye to the staff before leaving.
As she walked the path to get to the bridge. She ruminated over Lilian's words.
She knew she could never achieve her dreams here in this tiny town. She had been saving up her wage so that she could have enough for a train ticket and enough to live on in the Big City while she searched for positions. But it was going slower than she'd like. Her parents needed help sometimes and she would always help them, no matter what. She was forever grateful for what they had done for her.
Stella sighed as she walked the familiar path. It all seemed so far away. So very far.
