Jin paused in Kether's open doorway. He hadn't seen the boy all afternoon, and it was a little worrying.

Kether himself was bent over something, frowning in concentration. As Jin got closer, he realized it was a pair of stuffed animals. One was a plush dragon he recognized from Kether's babyhood. It was smooth with age, missing an eye and half the satin claws on its back foot. It had been repaired clumsily, but well enough to be functional. The other was a phoenix new enough to still have the tag attached. "Aren't you a little old for toys, Kether?" he asked, trying for mild, not critical.

He looked up, checking to make sure Jin was alone before he answered. "Oh, Dad. No, it's - watch." He made a small, elegant gesture and the dragon twitched to life, lifting its head and looking around with unmistakable awareness. It noticed the plush Phoenix and approached it, crooning. The bird toy didn't move, and the dragon bumped its small head against the wing with a plaintive cry. Kether gestured again, and it collapsed, plush once more.

"I can't wake the Phoenix up," he said, running a hand over it. "Tlalli-sensei says it's because it's new; it hasn't been exposed to my energy like the dragon has."

"Didn't you have one?" Jin asked. " I seem to remember buying the pair."

"I gave it to Tipha," was Kether's embarrassed reply. "She loved it so. I think she took it with her when she left."

Jin made an acknowledging noise and left Kether to his magical practice, but later in the day he headed up to a corner of the attic and started digging around in the boxes. Most of Kether's toys had been passed down to the other children, but he seemed to remember... There it was.

Jin pulled out the plushie kirryn, stroking a gentle hand over its soft flank. It hadn't been as well-loved as the dragon, but Kether had played with it until it had been badly damaged in an epic battle one afternoon. Jin had set it aside, intending to fix it, but Kether had hit the point where he'd declared himself too old for plushies and given his toys to the younger children not long after. The kirryn had been relegated to a box with some of Kether's other baby things, product of a sentiment Jin would rarely admit to.

"Not too sentimental now, am I?" he asked the toy with a chuckle, and carried it downstairs to ask Tlalli where she kept her sewing basket.

Mods, can I get an author tag and a tag for color: bittersweet, please?
