He stays with her every time she gets back home after chemo in the hospital. Just for safety. She never had to ask. He never had to ask either...
Sometimes - most of the times - it is not necessary. But there are days - like now - when she needs him there.

Carefully Nick supports her when they walk up the stairs. Her apartment is on the second floor.

"Alright. We're nearly there."

Freya snorts and rolls her eyes. Wants to hit him, but finds she needs to concentrate too much on climbing the stairs.

With the utmost care he sets her down on the couch. It earns him a "I won't break. I'm not made of glass, you know" comment. He just pulls up his shoulders before disappearing into the kitchen. Preparing two cups of tea. He knows by now that tea is the only thing – apart from water – that she can handle at these moments.

When he comes back in the living room, he finds her with closed eyes. Her breathing ragged.

Silently he places the two mugs on the table before setting himself next to her on the couch. She doesn’t react to it.

“Freya.”

A soft hum, but her eyes stay closed.

“Want to go to your bed?”

Carefully she shakes her head. He knows by now that the movement makes her dizzy if she has her eyes closed.

Nick keeps on watching her. He’s sure she must feel his eyes on her. Wonders why she doesn’t react.

It takes her a couple of minutes before she opens her eyes again. A soft sigh escaping her. Gratefully she accepts the cup of tea. Taking small sips. Already knowing she’s not going to be able to finish the entire mug.

“It’s going to be a difficult night…”

Her voice soft. Fragile. And for a second Nick thinks it sounds broken. But then she smiles at him. Sad, yes, but there is nothing in that smile that says she’s broken.

“We’ll make it through.”

Freya takes his hand in hers. Gently squeezing it.

“Can you…”

She does not need to finish her question. Nodding Nick stands up, his hand not letting go of hers. Cautiously he helps her stand again. Supporting her when she sways sideways, losing her balance. He brings his free arm around her waist, pulling her close to him. Together they walk to her bedroom.

“Sorry to trouble you so much.”

She feels more than sees Nick shaking his head.

“Don’t apologize. You knows it’s no trouble. I’ll be right outside the room, alright?”

Freya nods. Knowing she just has to call his name and he’ll be right next to her in seconds.

Slowly she strips her clothes, changing in her night clothing. She shivers when she crawls under the covers.

“Nick…”

There is worry on his face when he enters.

“Could you please bring me a hot water bottle. I’m freezing.”

It doesn’t make the concern go away.

Only a minute later he’s back. She gratefully accepts the bottle. Sighing happily when she feels the warmth spreading through her body.

She closes her eyes. Knowing that Nick will not leave the room. He’ll watch over her. The entire night. It makes her feel safe.

-

Coughing Freya wakes up some hours later, sitting up straight in her bed. Nick right next to her on the mattress. His hand – warm – rubbing her back. His gentle voice whispering small comforting words.

In one swift movement she swings back the blankets, stepping out of the bed. Stumbling to the bathroom. Nick right at her side. Preventing her from falling.
She all but falls on her knees before the toilet. It’s only because of his hold on her that she doesn’t hurt her knees.

Nick closes his eyes in pain for a second when she throws up. Gently his hand moves over her back. Making shushing noises when he hears her crying at the same time.

Freya’s hand reaches out to take some paper to whip her mouth clean. She stands up again, her legs promptly giving away underneath her. Once again, Nick is there to keep her up, to keep her stable.

Without a word, her puts one arm around her shoulder. Bending forward, his other arm under her knees. Swiftly he lifts her up, taking her in his arms. Laying her down on her bed again, before walking back to the bathroom.

Freya trembles when she hears the toilet flush. If she didn’t feel this ill, she’d feel embarrassed. He comes back a moment later. A glass of water in his hand.

“Don’t drink it. Just. Wet your lips and mouth a little.”

She nods and takes the glass. Wetting her lips before placing it on the bedside table.

It’s almost tender how he tucks her in when she lays herself back down again. She’s still shivering madly. Not only from the cold. They both know there will not be much sleep this night.

“Can I do something?”

He feels so helpless. Watching her like this. And not being able to do anything but offer her small comfort.

“Tell me a story?”

Nick looks at her in surprise. Before he smiles. The curtains are not completely closed and when he looks aside, he has a beautiful view of the nearly full moon.

“Can you turn on your other side? Or is that too much trouble?”

For a second she looks at him. Pondering. But then she shakes her head. Turning around. Slowly. Carefully.

“Take a look outside. Can you see the moon?”

He waits until she nods, confirming it.

“Well, on the moon lives a rabbit. There is said he was so selfless that he offered himself as food for an old man who was nearly starving. Jumping into the fire the man made, so that he could eat. However he did not burn. The man was a divine creature and was so touched by the rabbit’s virtue that he drew the likeness of the rabbit to the moon’s surface. The image is still draped in the smoke that rose when the rabbit cast itself in the fire.”

Freya smiles and closes her eyes. Carefully Nick lays himself behind her, wrapping his arms around her and holding her close. She’s too tired to object and she gratefully accepts the warmth of his body.

“In return the rabbit received the ingredients for the elixir of life. And even now we can see it pounding the herbs in the mortar and pestle.”

His breath tickles her neck and she chuckles softly.

“It’s not the elixir of life that he is making. In Japanese folklore, he’s just pounding the ingredients for rice cake.”

He lifts his head to look at her face. Eyes still closed. Her breathing has calmed down. And she stopped shivering. Finally.

Gently he kisses her hair. “Try to sleep some more.”
