Let's try again...

Claire dug through her closet for a new outfit. She couldn’t continue to wear the same black dress as she had for the last couple of weeks. She assured Daisuke and Choushin that she washed it every week, but that wasn’t a good enough excuse to keep it. She grumbled and moved a few things aside when something caught her attention out the corner of her eye. She pushed a few shirts out the way and stopped at the ball of yarn in front of her.

Claire turned the yarn around in her hands. The last item she made was scarves for Axel and Seth. She swallowed at the memories as she trailed her claws against the material. Claire used to knit every weekend, especially after a rough night during the war, but stopped after Axel’s funeral.

Claire wondered if she could knit again after such a long break. She walked over to her night table and searched for her needles. She slowly pulled them out and examined them for any wear. When the needles passed her quick inspection, she made her first loop. Claire fell into the familiar joy of being lost in her work again.

*~*~*

In the living room, Choushin fidgeted with the bracelet around her wrist as she glanced toward the bedroom.

Daisuke looked over from his paperwork. “Is everything alright?”

“Yes, well, um how long has Ms. Claire been in there?”

“About thirty minutes.”

“Is she alright? I know you mentioned before that she--”

“Yes, but she hasn’t done that since the day I found her in the tub. I’m sure she’s fine.”

Choushin nodded and shot another look towards the door. “Can we check though? I just, um, it’s been thirty minutes after all.”

Daisuke grinned. He was glad his hunch about Claire and Choushin getting along was right. He placed the last signature on the page and stood up. “Let’s go.”

Choushin jumped off the sofa before Daisuke walked around the table. She quickly walked to the open bedroom door and peaked inside. Daisuke opened his mouth, but closed it when he saw the knitting needles in Claire’s hand.

“Ms. Claire, are you--” Choushin started when Daisuke placed a hand on her shoulder and shook his head.

“Let’s leave her for awhile longer.”

Choushin frowned, ready to protest when Daisuke shook his head again. She looked back in the room and saw the concentration on Claire’s face. She nodded and walked back into the living room with Daisuke. They could give her a few more minutes.

*~*~*

Claire messed up a few times. She had to learn how to hold the needles again and figure out a pattern, but when she did, her rhythm started to return. She forgot the peace kitting bought her and the enjoyment when a project started to come together. She touched the garment in her lap.

I hope Seth will like his new sweater. Claire smiled as a tear rolled down her cheek. She wiped it away and continued her work.
