***
It's after a long day at work, in which Gina Sophia has had to scrub god-knows-what out of a stranger's shower and argue with a client that 'maid' does not, in any way, equal 'nanny', that the thought first occurs to her.
She comes home to find Natalie in the kitchen, hard at work on dinner. By smell alone it seems to be some sort of a stir-fry, her mother's favorite, and with hopeful eyes she drops her stuff on the table, walks behind Natalie, and wraps her arms around her girlfriend, settling her chin on Natalie's shoulder.
“Mmm. Smells wonderful. Is Mom eating today?”
Natalie winces. “No, not really. She had some toast earlier, but she hasn't been very hungry. I'm hoping that this will tempt her.”
Gina Sophia nods, ignoring the flash of pain and worry this causes. “You're the best.”
“I know.”
“No,” she quickly interjects. “I mean it. Most people wouldn't even make dinner, let alone take care of their girlfriend's sick mother on their day off. I don't know what I'd do without you. I honestly don't.” Snuggling closer, she murmurs, “I love you.”
“I love you too. And, god, Gina Sophia, you know I love to help out anyway I can.” Natalie swats at her, adding, “Now shoo. Go relax, take a shower, whatever. I need to finish this.”
Beaming, Gina Sophia is halfway through the doorway when it strikes her.
You should move in.
She stands stunned for a moment before filing that away for later and continuing on her way.

It isn't unusual for the stress and reality of everything to hit Gina Sophia. She wishes that it wasn't so, that she could be stronger, like her mother is, and that it wouldn't lead to her inevitably breaking down and dumping everything onto Natalie, but in the end, it does. She's just lucky to have such a loving, understanding girlfriend.
“Shhhh, sweetheart,” Natalie murmurs, running her hands through Gina Sophia's hair. “I'll help you. I'm here for you, whatever you need.”
Gina Sophia sniffles, nodding. “It's just... it's so overwhelming sometimes and even with all you do-- which, god, you have no idea how much I appreciate that-- it's like it's too much. How am I supposed to do this?”
“With help. With help and with the knowledge that no one is asking you to take everything on at once. No one expects you to. Just focus on yourself and your mom. I'll take care of the rest, okay?”
“God, I love you. I wish you were here all the time.”
They both pause, as that thought nudges at the back of Gina Sophia's mind once again, until suddenly--
“Maybe,” Natalie ventures, “you should get a pet. No, hear me out. Imagine coming home to some fluffy thing chasing around your feet and looking adorable while it showers you with loving adoration. I think you could use the emotional support, I really do.”
“I don't know...”
“You could get a kitten,” Natalia offers, voice sing-song.
Gina Sophia perks up. “A kitten?”
“A cute, tiny, fuzz-ball kitten. From a shelter. A kitten that needs you and will love you forever and ever and only requires food twice a day, clean litter every so often, and pets on demand.”
“Oh god,” Gina Sophia breathes. “I want a kitten.”

“Okay, well,” Natalie says as they make their way down the row of cages, meows deafening them from either side, “there's that cute orange one over there.”
“Oh god, his eyes!”
Natalie smiles. “What about the black and white kitten over there?”
“Oh, it's adorable!” Gina Sophia cries, rushing over. “But I'm not sure it's the one for me, you know?”
“There's a black one over here,” Natalie calls, having wandered down the row a bit.
“I don't know... Natalie!” Gina Sophia rushes to a nearby cage, eyes wide and a grin splitting across her features. “Natalie, over here!” She peers inside the cage, fingers just out of reach, cooing at the small fur ball inside. “I found the one!”
Natalie scrambles over, letting out a loud, “Aww,” as she does so.
“It's perfect, right?”
“I'll go get someone to help us.”
Gina Sophia stares into the cage, features softening. “Hey, there. Hey, little one. Do you want to come home with me? Oh, god, you're a cutie, aren't you?”
Within moments, Natalie returns with a volunteer who gladly opens the cage. She hands the kitten over to an eager Gina Sophia, telling them that she'd be up front ready to handle the paperwork after they acquaint themselves. Together the young women coo and fawn over the kitten, snuggling him close and petting him without pause.
“You should move in,” Gina Sophia blurts out.
Natalie freezes. “What?”
“I mean--” Flushing, Gina Sophia coughs and glances away. “I've been thinking about it for awhile. You're over every day anyway and you're such a huge help with Mom and everything. I don't know what I'd do without you. Not to mention the fact that I love you and I thought, maybe, that this could be our cat. You know, together.”
Silence.
“Well,” Natalie says after a long moment. “I think I'd like that. A lot. But only if we call him Cinnamon Bun.”
“Oh!” Gina Sophia bursts out. “We could call him Bunnie for short!”
They smile at one another, wide and easy, and exchange a quick kiss before hurrying toward the front desk.

And a live-in girlfriend.
IN ONE FABULOUS DAY. And Nathalie really is a peach, even if she names a grey cat after a primarily brown foodstuff. But still, I approve of cats called food things. I do.
Much like I approve of this fic. It captures the stress and the kittens just perfectly. And of course, there is love in it which makes it much easier to give love.
Thank you!
