She’s laughing so hard she nearly stumbles while running. It posses Nick no trouble to catch up with her.
“You shouldn’t have put on these sandals.”
His arms around her waist.
“What are they called again?”
Freya is still giggling when she answers. “Geta. They’re called geta. And I love wearing them. And it’s not because I’m wearing them that you managed to catch me.”
She looks in Nick’s smiling face. “It’s because of the laughter.” Gently she punches him on the chest. “Cheater.”
It makes him laugh as well and he spins her around. She wraps her arms around his shoulders. Letting her head fall backwards a little. She enjoys the feel of flying, the wind that caresses her face and plays with her hair.
Her eyes widen all of a sudden. Surprised Nick puts her back down.
“What is it?”
He can’t name the look on her face. It’s something between awe and sadness and longing. And it is strange to see it.
“Look.”
Freya points behind him and he turns his head around.
“Wow.”
He releases his arms around her waist, so they stand next to each other. One of her arms still around his shoulder.
“Aren’t they beautiful?”
It’s a question that doesn’t require an answer, so Nick just stays silent. It’s the right reaction.
Night is falling, the woods turning dark already. And near an old tree have arrived fireflies. They circle around, up to the sky. And back down again.
Freya holds him back when he takes a step forward. He can easily read the plea in her eyes. ‘Please don’t catch them.’
They stay and watch the fireflies for a little while longer. It’s only when Freya shivers slightly that they notice the chill night air.
“Let’s get back.”
She nods and they walk home in silence. A happy smile still on Freya’s face. As a child she loved watching at fireflies in the woods when night has fallen. Sometimes she could see them from her bedroom window. And sometimes she snuck out of the house. She knows now that her mother has always been aware of it.
Surprised she looks aside when Nick suddenly stands still. He crunches down and picks up something. She looks questioningly at him when he walks towards her again. There is something mysterious about the smile on his face.
“Hold out your hand.”
Freya does without hesitating. She trusts him.
Carefully he places a small black stone on her hand. With a little bit of imagination it has the shape of a heart.
“It’s beautiful.”
She wonders how he could have possibly seen it in the dark of the night.
