Notes: Heather Rackam is a famous pop singer that Mari, Alexa, and Jennika listen to. Alexa has a particular love of the star.
Mari was sitting on her bed sipping a glass of lemonade. She flipped a page in her book when she happened to look at the TV.
The famous pop singer, Heather Rackam, was plastered across the screen. Interested, Mari turned up the TV.
“Heather Rackam, 27, has been taken to the local hospital in Los Angeles, California, for what sources are saying is exhaustion,” the anchor said.
“Exhaustion?” Mari said to herself.
She hadn’t been keeping up with Heather. She hadn’t released an album since 2004. She wondered if Alexa had heard this news?
She reached for the landline and dialed her number. The phone rang several times before someone picked up.
“Hello?” Alexa’s voice came into the phone.
“Alexa?”
“Yeah?”
Mari bit her lip. She hated calling people. She should have just emailed her or something.
“I saw something about Heather on TV. Have you heard?”
Mari heard sniffing on the line, which concerned her. She started to ask what was wrong when Alexa answered.
“Yeah I saw. I hope everything is alright with her.”
“I wonder what’s going on with her?” Mari mused.
“She’s probably feeling pressured by the industry to put out more music or something,” Alexa said quietly.
“I don’t see why she should. She’s got tons of money. She could take a break if she wanted to,” Mari said absentmindedly.
“Mari, you don’t know what Heather’s life is like. How do you think it feels to be in the spotlight with everyone spreading gossip about you? She’s trying to raise her kids after that messy divorce and she needs to put out music to stay relevant. Have some compassion!”
Mari held the phone away from her. She hadn’t been expecting Alexa to get some impassioned about this.
“I’m sorry, Alexa. I was just making an observation.”
“You need to stop judging people, Mari. It isn’t one of your better attributes,” Alexa said harshly.
“Hey, where is this coming from Alexa?” Mari said somewhat testily.
There was talking in the background. She heard a sigh and a groan.
“Look I’ll talk to you later, Mari. I have to go.”
“Alexa, is everything alright?” Mari asked into the phone, but the line had gone dead.
Mari sighed and placed the phone back on the hook. Nettie jumped into her lap and rubbed against her.
Mari smiled at the tabby cat. “You love me don’t you girl?”
Nettie blinked her eyes and kneaded her paws on Mari’s pants.
Mari smiled and picked her up. She turned back toward the TV. She decided that she would try to call Alexa again tomorrow. Maybe she’d feel better after she slept? She sighed. She surely hoped so.
