Timeline: April 2011
Colors: Provence Lavender #3: dried herbs
Supplies and Styles: None
Word Count: 852
Summary: Veronica worries for her friend, so she gives her something to protect herself.
Rating: PG-13 for language

Notes: Illiniville is a fictional city in Indiana. Maxine and Veronica are students at Grimeke College, one of the Fourteen Sisters colleges spread throughout the United States. I wrote this and at first I didn't like it. I left the computer for like 30 minutes, added and took out a few things. I still think it's a tad cliche, but I do like what I've written. Constructive criticism is welcome as always.
Maxine finished eating her cob salad. She gathered up her books and stuffed them into her light green messenger bag.
“Max, I have been looking for you,” someone behind her said.
Maxine turned to see her best friend, Veronica Yu.
Maxine smiled. “Oh hey Roni! I was starving, so I stopped here before going home.”
Maxine hugged Veronica and then threw her container into the trash.
“So have you heard about the mosquito outbreak?” Maxine said as they left the food court.
“Oh yeah I’ve heard about it alright,” Veronica said lowly.
Maxine walked down the steps with Veronica following closely behind her.
“Max, I think you should let me drive you home tonight,” Veronica said touching her shoulder.
Maxine turned to Veronica and smiled.
“I only live a couple of blocks away from school, Roni. You’re way too overbearing,” Maxine said taking her friend’s hand.
“I’m just being cautious, Max. That whole mosquito outbreak sounds like a cover,” Veronica said gripping Maxine’s hand.
Maxine smiled. “What do you think it is, then?”
Veronica stared at Maxine for a moment. She opened her mouth to say something, but then she closed it again.
“Here I have something for you,” Veronica said reaching into her purse.
Maxine sighed and waited. Veronica was always giving her a concoction or another. It’ll help your cold, she would say.
Veronica pulled out a small plastic bag.
“What is this?” Maxine said taking it.
“It’s herb of hawthorn. It’ll help ward off mosquitoes,” Veronica said pressing into her hand.
“Are you serious?” Maxine said holding the little bag up.
“Yes Max, trust me.”
They reached the edge of the campus. Veronica gave her a hug.
“Be safe, Max,” she said into her ear.
“I will, Roni,” Maxine said hugging her tightly.
Veronica let go out her. She watched as Maxine walked down the street.
“Please don’t let anything happen to her,” Veronica said.
She watched as Maxine turned the corner at the streetlamp.

Maxine coughed as she walked down Grand Rapids Street. She lived on Midland Street with two other girls. They usually spent the nights out, so she wouldn’t have to worry about them for the night. She just wanted to take a hot bath and watch the newest episode of Brebury. She knew she was sort of out of the age range for the show, but it had been her obsession for some five years now. Old habits die hard.
She was at the end of the street when the streetlamps went out.
“What the hell?” Maxine muttered. Illiniville was notorious for their shitty coverage of the city’s utilities. It seemed that they hadn’t gotten around to fixing this side of the city’s wiring.
Maxine dug into her bag for her cell phone. She hadn’t thought to bring a flash light as she had thought the city had taken care of this problem.
Suddenly she felt cold. She looked up from her bag with her cell phone in hand.
She couldn’t hear anything and the little light from her cell was barely enough to tell what was going on.
Maxine clutched her phone and walked on. She was almost at home. She sped up. Crime in Illiniville wasn’t the biggest problem the city had, but one couldn’t be too safe.
She spotted the cottage house in the distance. She was almost there.
She started to run, but as she did she tripped over something.
“Fuck!” She said to herself.
“You don’t quite know how to take a hint, do you?” A voice above her said.
Maxine looked up. She couldn’t see anything.
She felt, rather than saw, something caress her neck.
“I’ve been waiting for you,” the voice said.
Maxine stumbled as she tried to get up. But she couldn’t stand. Something was holding her down.
“Stop!” She yelled.
She had someone laughing softly.
“Use the hawthorn,” Veronica’s voice came back to her.
Maxine reached into her pocket and pulled out the little bag.
She felt a presence on her left. She threw the bag wildly in that direction.
She heard a sizzling sound and suddenly the street lamps shot back on. Maxine stood up and looked around.
“What the fuck!?” A female voice yelled.
Maxine looked on her side and that’s when she saw her.
A young female woman was clutching her hands to her face.
“You little bitch!” The woman yelled through her fingers.
Maxine picked up her bag and ran the rest of the way to her house. She fumbled for her keys and unlocked the door. She threw her bag in and locked the door behind her.
She leaned against the door and tried to catch her breath.
“What was she?” Maxine said to herself.
She walked over to the window and peered out. The street lights were still on, but she didn’t see the woman.
Maxine exhaled. Whoever the woman was, she was gone.
“Was that a crackhead?” Maxine said to herself.
She picked up her bag. She didn’t want to think about it. She was safe in the house now and that was all that mattered.
