They are walking through town. His arm around her shoulders, her arm around his waist. After all, he’s a good head taller than she is. He’s carrying a bag on his back. Her sport bag is slung over her shoulder, banging against her leg with every step she takes.

She laughs when she hears his story. He soon joins her.

“You are not serious? You actually told him that?”

Nick just nods. Still smiling broadly.

“You are crazy!”

Another nod.

“Tell me you’d have done differently?”

Freya snorts. “Of course not. I’d have reacted just the same way, you know that.”

Without confirming it, Nick pulls her a little closer against his side, kissing the top of her head. The silence that falls is comfortable and doesn’t actually need to be broken.

“Gosh, the weather is way to gorgeous to be spending time in the Dojo.”

“Yeah. What do you think. We skip training?”

Her free hand swings forward, hitting his belly. “Skipping training? We? Skipping training?”

Nick laughs. Bringing his free hand up to ruffle her hair, knowing full well that she hates it. Shaking her head she pulls away, the arm that was around his waist hitting the offending hand away. His arm slipping off her shoulders.

Freya glares playfully at him. It makes him laugh again. She smiles. It’s impossible really to be angry with him.

“You know. It’s strange, isn’t it?”

She looks questioningly at him.

“A dojo. A real Japanese Dojo. In the middle of a European city. The building really stands out.”

They hold still before the entrance. Both looking up.

“It’s pretty.”

Looking aside, Nick notices the strange look on her face. There is longing and adoration and… It’s something he doesn’t understand.

“Freya?”

She smiles at him, back to normal.

“Come on. Before sensei makes us run extra laps because we’re a minute too late.”

They walk inside and Nick wonders what just went on in her head.

-

Circling around each other. Arms in front of them – a perfect defense. No more smiles. Concentrated. Eyes locked. They won’t get distracted.

Freya narrows her eyes and steps to the side when Nick moves suddenly. Without attacking. A feint. Sometimes she manages to read them. Not always.

She attacks, seeing she is moving already. It catches him by surprise for a second. He’s only just on time to block her incoming fist. Nick moves to the other side a split second before her foot connects with his belly. Using the turning momentum after her kick, Freya brings her hand to her head. Her elbow pointing to Nick’s head. He immediately knows what her next – and final – move will be. Already he brings his arm up to block a blow to the side of his head.

They continue the free fight for another ten minutes. Until sensei calls out ‘mate’. They stop immediately. Even though Nick was moving in for an attack.

“Gosh, you guys really are looking serious and angry when you are fighting each other.”

Freya looks aside. Still not smiling. Before turning her gaze back to Nick.

“Such good friends. But when you’re on the tatami, you two really are rivals, no?”

She bows to Nick before turning to look at Sensei.

“Yeah, perhaps we are.”

-

They walk back home together. In silence. They don’t need much words for they know each other well enough.

A thoughtful look on Freya’s face when they pass a café. Tables placed outside because of the good weather.

“Do you need to go home immediately?”

Nick shakes his head. “No, not really, why?”

Freya smiles and jerks her head to the café. “I’m hungry and I could appreciate a nice cold drink.”

“Alright.”

They take place at one of the tables, and Freya closes her eyes – letting the sun caress her face.

“Training was good.”

She hums in agreement.

“So, we are friends. But we are rivals at training?”

Freya laughs and looks at him.

“Isn’t it true then? We are always so serious when we fight each other. And…”

She needs to bite back laughter when she sees the look on the waiter’s face when he brings them their drinks.

“Honest. I need you to keep me sharp and to become better. So yeah, perhaps I do really consider you a sort of rival at training. Someone to focused. You are… my goal.”

Nick’s eyes widen comically and she laughs, placing her hand on his.

“You are better than I am. You have always been. So, it’s my goal to become better and to – one day – beat you.”

He shakes his head. Holding up his glass to her.

“To being rivals.”

She brings her glass up as well.

“To being friends.”
