As soon as Kellom had gotten word that the fire-freak was out in the open, he'd known it was a trap. But it was also an opportunity he couldn't afford to pass up.

And, sure enough, there he was, seeming alone. Kellom signaled his guards to circle around to deal with the freak's inevitable backup before coming into the open himself.

The freak jumped a little, then flung fire at him.

Fast little bastard, aren't you. But Kellom had fought freaks of all stripes before, and this one had a limited range of motion.

He dodged the fire, feeling the heat gliding past him and smelling smoke. He ran in, getting closer. The freak stumbled back, shooting fire again. Kellom dropped to one knee to dodge, getting his sword out and close enough, now, to use the hilt to break the freak's jaw and shifting his grip so, when he fell back, the blade was at his throat.

He needs to die. This crippled freak that called himself a prince--as if he was anything close to the same as Kellom's brothers. Idiot though Mellir was, weak though Andrell was, and traitors both, they were still human. For this freak to dare use the same title they had...

If any freak deserved being given into Tana's creative hands for its death, it was this one.

But if Kellom killed him now, or gave him straight to Tana, he would be wasting potentially precious leverage against the invading army. More importantly, the freak almost certainly knew at least some of their plans.

He needs to die.

An endless second ticked by with his sword at the freak's throat, before he finally moved to slam the hilt into the boy's head again, this time knocking him unconscious. Kellom dragged the freak upright and pushed him at one of his guards. "Find out what he knows. By any means necessary."

"Yes, sir."

Kellom let out a long, slow breath. When they're done, Tana can have him. To hell with leverage. Once I have what he knows, I won't need it.

Smiling grimly, Kellom limped back to his command post. He had burns that needed tending, and had to wash. He should visit Fera tonight, too. Perhaps this time there would finally be a child. No, no perhaps. There would be.

He had a valuable freak to interrogate--one who couldn't get away, even if the guards blinked. The setbacks of the last few weeks would be easily reversed. And he and his wife would finally have a child. Soon.

The sun was setting, painting the sky a triumphal, bloody red. Kellom's future had never looked brighter.

Oh, Kellom. Things are going to go very badly for you in the end. Though it looks like Isshiri is going to pay for it first.

Ugh. Jeez, you write such great villains. I can practically taste his evil happiness.

Whoa, those last two lines are fabulous. Great use of imagery.
