Colors: Lawn Green 1. (summer nights), Crimson 7. (You're not assuming anything!)
Supplies and Styles: Canvas (Nate is 19 and Helen is 17), oils (something more), stain (Thought is only a flash between two long nights, but this flash is everything.- Henri Poincare), glitter ("If you want to know where your heart is, look where your mind goes when it wanders." - Bernard Byer)
Title: Lazy Days
Word Count: 1,193
Rating: PG-13
Summary: Nate spends a night with his friends.
Warnings: some implications of racism and homophobic behavior
Notes: Meet Diane and Jake two of Helen and Nate's friends who can see what's going to happen even if they want to deny it. Now Helen's mom isn't too happy about Nate although his parents are cool with it. For Nate his aunt has the problem also can you guess why Jake's dad would have a problem with him? It may be cliche, but I wanted to do it. Enjoy!
Nate took a seat on the patio and closed his eyes as the breeze passed through his hair. He loved summer nights. Nothing was better than sitting on the patio after a lazy day and enjoying an equally lazy night. Nate leaned back in the chair and stretched his arms over his head. He started to doze off when his phone buzzed.
He reached for it and flipped it open. “Hey Jake,”
“Hey Nate my dad is in a mood and if he finds out what I’ve been doing with my tutor I know it won’t be good. So, can I come over?”
“Sure thing, call me when you get here, okay?”
“Okay! See you in a bit.”
“Okay, see you.” Nate closed the phone and relaxed on the chair. He tried to keep his eyes open, but it was hard when another comfortable breeze passed over him. His eyes started to close when he heard his name.
“Hmm?” Nate sat up and looked over the railing of the patio to see Helen and Diane waving at him.
“Hey! My parents are out of town and Helen’s mom is in bitch mode so do you mind if we visit?” Diane called out as Helen nodded.
“Sure, come on up! I’m not in the main house, so you don’t have to worry about Vergil or Carla messing with us. Jake will be here in a bit too.”
“Great! Be up there in a bit!” Diane grinned. She walked towards the door as Helen followed her. Nate’s eyes lingered on Helen a while longer before he sat back in his seat. He started looking at Helen more often and noticing things about her. Little things like the way her eyes crinkled when she laughed or how she tried to eat a sandwich without smearing her lipstick. The way her jeans fit and how her t-shirt seemed to show off her figure…
Nate shook his head. He couldn’t think about that when Helen was minutes, probably seconds, away from the door. He pushed the thought back and saved it for later.
“Hey! Thanks for letting us crash for the night.” Diane dropped in the nearest chair.
“Yeah thanks.” Helen walked over to the patio and smiled.
Nate felt his face heat up as he nodded. “Sure thing, you know you’re always welcomed over here.”
Helen smiled and started to mess with a loose hair when Diane giggled.
“Aww, are you two going to kiss now? I mean it’s long overdue.”
“Di!” Helen exclaimed as she disappeared back into the room to talk to a giggling Diane.
Nate sat back in his seat and scrubbed his hands over his face. It wouldn’t be the first time he daydreamed about kissing Helen in the warm night. He knew Diane would pick up on it. She was too perceptive sometimes. He had to change the subject.
“Hey we can watch a movie or something while we wait for Jake.” Nate said as he walked in the room.
“Sure, I’m game. Helen needs a distraction.” Diane nodded as Helen sighed.
“What was it this time?” Nate asked as he took a seat on the couch.
“The same who are you going to marry argument. They think we’re getting too close so they…um…” Helen trailed off.
“They…” Nate said.
Helen bit her lip as Diane sighed.
“They want her to stop hanging out with you and find a nice black guy to settle down with after college. We haven’t even started yet and they’re already on her back.” Diane huffed, crossing her arms over her chest.
Nate felt something twist in his stomach when he looked over at Helen. “Is that why I haven’t seen you so much?”
“Yeah. I think it’s silly and they should let me hang out with however I want. Besides, it wouldn’t be summer if I didn’t see you at least once.” Helen smiled.
The knot in Nate’s stomach disappeared as he relaxed against his seat. “Yeah it wouldn’t! Don’t let them get to you Helen. My aunt has started to talk, but it’s not like I listen to anything she says. I’m over 18 now, she can’t say anything.”
“You’re right, but you know my mom. She didn’t stop talking about it until she went to bed. I might be hanging out in a hotel for a while.” Helen said.
“Why? Just stay here. It’s one of the side houses we come to when we want peace and quiet. Marcus and the others have stayed here I don’t see why you two can’t.” Nate said.
“Really? It’ll just make my mom talk more you know.” Helen said.
“And I started caring when…” Nate trailed off as Helen laughed.
“Okay, I’ll stay here for a while. At least until my mom cools down, I often wonder what she’ll do when I’m away at school.” Helen said.
“Maybe she’ll find a suitable hobby.” Diane said.
Nate and Helen started laughing as Diane sat back with a smug smile. Nate looked at Helen out of the corner of his eye. He felt good that Helen was laughing again instead of crying or picking a fight on Xbox live.
“Hey, what did I miss?” Jake walked in and tossed his keys on a nearby table.
“Oh just a joke about Helen’s mom finding a hobby.” Diane said.
“Good I’m coming in to the good part.” Jake grinned and took a seat next to Diane.
“Nice to see you made it Jakey. So, what’s going on with your dad again?” Nate asked.
“He’s in a mood because the economy hasn’t been good to his company. When that happens he starts snooping around my life since my sisters can do no wrong. They are good cover when I need to sneak a guy out of the house, though. Anyway, he started to ask about my tutor. If he finds out what I really been studying I don’t think he’ll be very happy.” Jake sighed and rested his head on Diane’s shoulder.
Diane cooed and squeezed his hand. “Sorry to hear that. I don’t even want to know what he would do.”
“I’m not willing to test it so expect to see me for a couple of days okay?” Jake looked over at Nate.
“It’s fine. You won’t be alone stay as a long as you want.” Nate said.
“Are you going to stay?” Jake asked looking between Helen and Diane.
“Yep I’m staying and he already asked Helen to stay too.” Diane said.
“So they finally made plans, eh?” Jake grinned as Diane snickered.
Helen messed with her nails while Nate cleared his throat.
“I think it’s time for a movie or at least some mind numbing infomercials.” Nate stood up and looked for the remote.
“I agree.” Helen mumbled.
“They’re agreeing on things! I tell you it’s only a matter of time before we hear wedding bells.” Diane said as Jake nodded.
“I agree.”
“Guys!” Helen exclaimed and threw a pillow at them. Diane and Jake laughed harder as Nate shook his head in amusement.
Spending the summer nights alone was good, but enjoying it with his friends was better.
