Last of waterspout and fog grey! :-)
She was scared. Lost. And alone. For the first time since she could remember, the forest didn’t offer her comfort…
“Mum?”
Timid voice. Fragile. Small in the silence all around her.
Nelly goes further. She doesn’t know if she’s walking further into the woods or if she’s getting closer to the road. Closer to houses. To people.
“Mum?”
A little louder. So scared. The darkness of the night would frighten any other nine-year old kid.
The sound of clattering water slowly becomes louder. It’s only now that she realizes it has been present for a while already. She just didn’t register it…
A bit more confident, she walks towards it. Knowing that if she follows the stream, she’ll get to the road. And when she follows the road, she’ll get home…
When she arrives at the river, Nelly is surprised to see she reached the waterfall. She’s much deeper in the woods than she thought.
For a second she sets herself down at the riverbank. Drops of water refreshing her. And it is only now she notices how tired her feet are. How tired she is.
She is tempted to just stay here. To step into the water and refresh herself. And then to lay herself down and just rest a little.
“Nelly?”
The worried voice of her mother, not that far away.
“Mum! I’m here! At the waterfall!”
Safe…
She cries when she’s in her mother’s arm. Relishes when her arms hold her close, when fingers comb through her hair.
“It’s okay. I’m here. I found you. You’re safe…”
