“He does bad things,” she whispers, late one night, the two of them huddled under the cave of his blankets. “He says-- I don’t like what he does.”

His heartbeat thunders. “Bad things?”

She looks away. “I don’t like when he touches me.”

He’s too young to know what she means, but somehow he understands anyway. “What about your mommy?”

Tears slide down her cheeks. “Mommy’s gone a lot. She doesn’t listen much and he says it’s a secret.”

He kisses one of those glistening cheeks, startled by the salty wetness. After a moment, he softly tells her, “Now I know the secret too.”

“I like that.”

They stay like that, locked together in silence, until he gathers the courage to speak. “I didn’t fall down.”

Her brow knits, not that he can see it in the dark. But he knows. “Fall down?”

“When I said I got hurt because I fell down.” Bruises riddle his back and arms. “I didn’t fall down.”

“I know.” Her hand clutches at his arm as they settle, curled up on the bed. “I knew you were telling stories.”

They fall quiet, letting the night envelope them. “I love you.”

She smiles against his skin. “I love you too.”

They have one another.
