Danny came back from camp with holes worn through the soles of her sneakers and rainbow stripes of paint still fading from her palms.

"We made a rainbow in handprints," she told Michael, sitting on the end of his bed. He'd broken his leg again, and was stuck until further notice. "On a big blue sky wall. Most kids picked a color but I just used all of them."

"How come?" he asked, leaning in to poke the multicolored palm she held out.

"Because they're all pretty," she said, and left flecks of paint behind when she ruffled his hair.
