Title: Talk to Me
Word Count: 1,453
Rating: PG-13
Summary: Claire meets Choushin and realizes that Axel inspired more people than she thought.
Warnings: none
Notes: I had this on my hard drive for a while and finally finished it. I don't know if I'll be able to finish my challenge, but I'll try to get far. Enjoy!
“I’m going to the store to get some food that isn’t from a fast food restaurant. Choushin will be here to watch you until I get back.” Daisuke announced over breakfast.
“I don’t need a baby sitter.” Claire snapped as she stabbed her eggs.
“Can Seth come back home? Have you contacted your family yet?”
“…”
“Until that happens then someone is watching you.”
Claire huffed and finished her eggs. Daisuke decided to stay and help Claire during her time of grief. He couldn’t let anything happen to her. He wouldn’t be able to face himself or Axel in the Second Great Plane if he did.
Claire wasn’t too happy about that, but it felt good to have someone to talk to; even if he did annoy her.
“I thought Artemis was coming over?”
“He has a few things to take care of in Coven. He’ll be over after he finishes it.”
“What about your business?”
“Kenji is taking care of it. Don’t you worry about it.”
“You have everything figured out.”
“I do.”
Claire rolled her eyes and continued working on her breakfast. She couldn’t drink or be around the tub without supervision. Daisuke could keep up with her in a fight even when she used her shadows. He could match her in an argument and stopped any attempts for her to sneak out. He was good and she couldn’t stand it.
A knock on her door took her away from her thoughts.
“Ahh, that’s her.” Daisuke wiped his mouth with a napkin as he left the table.
“Great.” Claire mumbled. Being watched by someone who is fifteen years my junior that’s great.
“Claire, do you remember Choushin?” Daisuke said as a Fire Demon woman with red hair and green eyes peered over his shoulder.
“Hello Ms. Claire! It’s nice to meet you!”
“It’s Mrs. Shepard and it’s nice to meet you too.” Claire sat straight and sipped her coffee.
“Oh, excuse me.” Choushin whispered and moved behind Daisuke again.
Daisuke shot Claire a glare and gently moved Choushin in front of him. “Choushin is going to be here with you all day. I expect you’ll get along, right?”
Choushin flashed a smile as she nodded. “Right!”
“Sure.” Claire mumbled.
Daisuke quietly sighed as he gathered the dishes from the table. “I’m going to go the store, but I’ll be right back. If anything goes wrong or if you need me you have my cell.”
“I’ll be sure to call.” Choushin said.
“I’ll be sure to lose your number.” Claire said under her breath.
Daisuke ignored Claire and flashed a grin at Choushin. “Thank you for doing this on such short notice.”
“Oh it’s fine! I don’t have any jobs and Jun has my shift at the orphanage. Genma knows where I’m at so it’s good. Thank you.” Choushin smiled.
“It’s fine.” Daisuke nodded. He walked over to Claire and leaned towards her ear. “Be nice to Chou. She doesn’t have to be here.”
“Neither do you.” Claire hissed.
Daisuke ignored her again as he stood up and adjusted his jacket. “I’ll return ladies. See you soon.” He nodded to both of them before he disappeared in a swirl of shadows.
Claire glared at the spot Daisuke stood before she turned her gaze to Choushin. She looked over her frame taking in the strong arms, long legs, and sculpted hips. She noticed the bindings around her chest and the sharpened nails. Choushin didn’t look like she could hurt anyone with her sweet face and big green eyes. However, Claire knew it was possible. It was something she used in the past, after all.
“So, what division do you work for?” Claire asked.
“I’m in the assassin division. I’m on break now since the orphanage and hospital opened back up, but I get called in when I’m needed for a particular job.” Choushin said, taking a seat across from her. “Are you familiar with it?”
“I used to work for Daisuke a long time ago in the same division. Of course, it was just a small group of us trying to figure out what to do with our lives when we joined, but it expanded as you can see.”
“Yeah it did.”
Claire finished her coffee and Choushin hummed quietly.
“Um, Mr. Daisuke said that you have a kid.”
“I do.”
“Oh what’s their name?”
“Seth.”
“How old is he?”
“In human years he’s seven. You can figure out how old he is in demon years.”
“Oh okay.”
Claire cleaned her plate as Choushin stood up.
“I’m going to take a look around. If you don’t mind?”
“Go ahead.”
Choushin nodded and started to walk around the living room. Claire washed the dishes to ignore the reprimanding voice in the back of her mind. When she finished she followed Choushin who wandered over to the picture of Axel in the living room. Claire felt pride at the awe on Choushin’s face as she stared at him.
“Wow. I heard rumors, but I didn’t know how handsome he was.”
Claire nodded as she turned to look at the picture of Axel is his uniform. His dark blade at his side as shadows curled around his body, ready to protect their master, his black hair slicked back with a few strands in his face, and his gray eyes blazed with battle.
“Yes Axel was a very handsome man. His smile would get me every time. I know he’s making many people swoon in the Second Great Plane.”
“The rumor that passed through my neighborhood was he saved us from this tyrannical Wind Demon and his group. I don’t remember much because I was a baby, but there are stories about him and how brave he was. I wished I could have met him.” Choushin said softly.
“He was an amazing man. He opened his heart for everyone and anyone that needed it. He was a very brave man, sometimes foolish, but very brave.” Claire said proudly. She wiped a stray tear that rolled down her cheek.
“Can you tell me more about him?”
Claire turned to Choushin and saw the truth in her eyes. She nodded and gestured to the sofa. “The first time I met him I thought he was the silliest man in the world, but he was able to get me to smile easily.”
“He sounds amazing.” Choushin took a seat on the sofa as Claire followed her.
“He was. He was an amazing man. I first met Axel in the gym. I didn’t notice him for a few days until someone told me his control over shadows. It’s a power that all Shadow Demons have, but not many can control another person’s shadow like he could. I finally took a peak at him and what I saw impressed me. Axel caught me watching him and almost lost control.”
Choushin giggled as Claire gave a small laugh.
“He regained his control and introduced himself to me. I remembered shaking his sweaty hand and thinking if I was going to talk to him again. We talked the next time I entered the gym.”
Claire started to tell her about the time it rained on their first date and the way Axel wanted to make it up to her. Choushin’s eagerness surprised Claire. She knew Axel had an effect on the people in Suikar, but to see it in front of her was different. After she finished another story she checked the clock.
“Choushin would you like something to eat?”
“Um, is that alright?”
“Yes it fine I still have some food here from last night. I can warm it up for you.”
“Thank you.”
“It’s no problem. I can tell you more about Axel and the movies he enjoyed when I come back.”
“Sounds great!”
Claire nodded; she stood up and made her way over to the kitchen when Daisuke walked through the door his arms full of bags. A few shadows carried more things inside as Choushin sat up and waved.
“Hello Mr. Daisuke! That was fast.”
“There weren’t many people in the store and shadows help.” Daisuke grinned. He walked over and ruffled her hair before making his way over to the kitchen.
“You were nice to Choushin I hope.” Daisuke said as he placed items on the table.
“I am. She’s a very nice girl.” Jun said. She prepared their food while Daisuke put up groceries in the kitchen. She walked back to the living room and handed a plate to Choushin.
“What movies did he enjoy?” Choushin asked as she started on her food.
“Comedies mostly, a couple movies about humans, and a few sci-fi movies.”
I knew she would like Chou.Daisuke grinned as he put up the groceries.
