“Nelly.”
He takes her hands in his. Squeezes gently.
“We have to do this. We have no choice. You know that.”
She avoids his gaze. Knows she won’t be able to resist once she looks in his eyes. She loves him too much.
“We need you Nelly. Without you we can never succeed.
The voices of her brother, Timmy, and her lover, Rafael.
“You listen to the people. And they listen to you. You know what lives in their hearts. You know how we can win this. You are the only one who can speak up for us, for them. You are…”
She still remember how she yelled at them. Still remembers the shocked looks on their faces when they realized she was angry. Really angry.
If there is one thing she doesn’t want, it’s to fight. Certainly not as the Leader of the Rebellion. She is no leader. Silent. She can’t speak up. She never manages to find the right words. Never on time anyway. Always too late. When the moment has passed. When words, her words, matter no more.
“Nelly. Please. This isn’t about me. Or you. This isn’t about us. It is about them.”
He turns her around. His arms circle around her waist and he kisses her neck tenderly. Slowly he points to the children in front of them. In the play garden.
“It’s for them that we have to do this.”
They stay silent for a couple of minutes. He knows better that to push her.
The moment she sighs softly, when she places her hands on top of his, he knows he has won her over.
“Alright Rafael. For them…”
Without looking at him, she walks inside. The building feels how it looks. Cold and dark and old.
Determined she opens the door to the conference room. Grateful for Rafael’s presence beside her. They will not see her doubts or fears. She will not let them.
“Nelly! You’re in?”
Her brother’s hopeful voice. She just looks at her. Instead it is her friend, lover, husband, soul mate, that answers. Knowing she doesn’t trust her voice to speak up just yet.
“Your sister’s in Timmy.”
Delighted he throws his arms around her shoulders. Hugging her like he used to do before. Before…
“Let’s get on with it boys.”
Her voice tells them all she is serious and impatient. And dangerous. They are all dangerous.
