Notes: Lord Renaud Margas is Anna's cousin through her father's side of the family. His mother, Daniele, is Jean Michele's (Jean Luc and Anna's father) younger sister.
“Princess Marie,” a voice came behind her.
Marie put down her embroidery and turned to face the visitor. She wasn’t surprised to see Sieur Jean Luc Everart standing there.
Jean Luc bowed to the princess.
“The Queen wishes to see you,”
Marie raised a dark eyebrow. She turned to her ladies.
“I will return as soon as I can,” she told them.
Her ladies nodded and Marie allowed Jean Luc to escort her out of the room.
“So what does Lady Anna want of me?” Marie asked him.
“I will let the Queen answer that,” Jean Luc smirked at her. Marie frowned at him and averted her eyes.
They finally came to the Queen’s rooms. Jean Luc knocked slightly and a female voice told them to enter. Jean Luc opened the door and ushered Marie inside.
Marie looked around the room. The Queen was sitting in a chair with her ladies surrounding her. They giggled when they saw the princess.
“I have brought her, sister,” Jean Luc said bending down and kissing his sister’s cheek. She smiled brightly at him. Anna then turned to her step-daughter.
“Dear Marie. I was talking to your father, the King, and we were discussing your future,” Anna said.
“My future?”
“Yes, my dear. You are fifteen and in two years you will reach your majority. It is time to think of marriage.”
Marie blushed and turned red. “But my lady, I am still a child and besides I have all the time in the world to be married.”
“You are in the first blooms of womanhood and the King has received offers for your hand from various royals across the continent.”
Marie looked up. Anna was staring at her with those piercing grey eyes of hers.
“You’d like to be married off to a prince of some sort to escape me, wouldn’t you?”
Marie bit her inner cheek. Anna was trying to get a rise out of her, but she wouldn’t give her the satisfaction.
“But I know you are so very fond of your sisters and of course you love Monde with all your heart, am I right, Princess Marie?”
“I love my country dearly,” Marie said quietly.
“I told Henri that and he agreed that it would be best if you married a Mondian nobleman. I suggested my cousin, Lord Margas.”
Marie blanched. “I cannot marry Lord Margas. He’s forty and he has a passel of children of his own already!”
Anna smiled. “Renaud is a kind man and since you love children, I’m sure you’d be a great stepmother to them, my dear.”
Marie scowled at the woman. “I cannot marry Lord Margas, I am too young and I-“
“You have feelings for someone already?” Anna asked snidely.
Marie instantly thought of Jehann. How could she know about him? Did she have her people watching?
“You know your father would never approve of you marrying a lowly knight, dear Marie. Although I will say the boy is very handsome and his future is promising. But a d’Ambry marrying a royal? It just cannot be done.”
Marie glowered at Anna. Anna smirked at her.
“But you shan’t worry your pretty little head for now. You are still young and the marriage will not take place for two years yet. You may go now.”
Marie curtseyed to Anna before storming out of the room. She ran blindly until she knocked into someone.
“Marie?”
She looked up and saw Jehann looking down at her.
“Is there something wrong?” He asked.
Marie shook her head before bursting into tears.
Jehann came closer and touched her arm lightly.
Marie grabbed his arm and held onto to it. She continued to cry as Jehann put his arm around her.
“It’s okay, I am here,” he whispered into her hair.
Marie cried into his leather jerkin. She didn’t know how long they stood there, but he let her cry until her tears were spent before escorting her back to her rooms. After he had left, Marie lay on her bed.
“Do you need anything?” One of her ladies asked when the day had turned into night.
“No, I am fine,” Marie said. The girl nodded and left Marie alone.
I have to find a way out of this. Marie thought to herself. I refuse to marry that old man. I can’t when...when…
She wouldn’t say the words. She promised herself that she would find a way out of this. She was her mother’s daughter. She was the granddaughter of the great Fernando and Isabelle. She wouldn’t give up.
It was with these thoughts that Marie finally fell asleep.
