Notes: Continuation of “Going backwards”

She shivers when she crawls in her bed that night. Not wanting to close her eyes and actually fall asleep. Not wanting to … forget. She knows she’ll forget when she sleeps.

“Rafael…”

There is a ring around her finger. A golden band that wasn’t there in the morning.

She fights the night. Tries to fight back the slumber. But she feels her eyelids drop. Yawning she surrenders. Vaguely she can see a flash of lighting outside the window. Feels more than sees the beginning of a storm.

“If you could turn back time. Now. With all you know. All the knowledge of the years passed…”

He doesn’t finish voicing his thought. Nelly knows what he means anyway. The connect between them runs too deep…

She shakes her head. Her fingers caressing his cheek. Her thumb brushing his lips. There is no hesitation when she speaks.

“I would do everything exactly the same. I would do it again Rafael. All of it. Loving you. The Rebellion. Losing everything. All the pain. Remembering you again with every life. Forgetting you again each morning after that. I’d do it all again. Without hesitation. Because I know we cannot be kept apart.”

She kisses him gently.

“No matter if I don’t remember in the morning. And it might take me a while before I remember again. But this bond between us can’t be broken. This power, our love, is too strong. We will not be kept apart. I will not allow them to keep us apart. One day you will be back. By my side.”

Rafael smiles, pulls her closer to his body.

Nelly wraps her arms around his neck, hides her faces in his shoulder.

“This feels too real. Way too real.”

Rafael doesn’t reply, just tightens his hold on her. And she can feel her resolve crumbling. Feels the doubt sneaking in.

“I don’t want you to go again… I don’t want them to steal my memories again.”

It is a mere whisper. His fingers running through her hair.

“Should I have stayed silent? Should I not have spoken up? Should I not have voice what needed to be said?”

She can feel Rafael shake his head.

“No. Someone needed to stand up against them. Someone needed to speak and lead the Rebellion.”

Nelly sighs softly.

“You did everything right Nelly. You listened to the people. To their fears and their thoughts and their opinions. You listened to them and you gave them hope. And then you stood up and lead them to freedom. You did nothing wrong…”

A humorless chuckle escapes her lips.

“No, I did nothing wrong. That is why they took you away from me. Took you away from time…”

She takes a deep breath.

“You asked me if I would do the same things again. If we could turn back time.”

Rafael does not react.

“Despite this. Despite the pain and losing you time and time again. Despite the doubts and the fears. Yes, I would do it all again. Because you were next to me. You made me believe. That it was the right thing to do. You made me believe in me.”

“I will come back Nelly. I will be by your side again.”

They stay silent, just enjoying being near each other.

“I’m sorry Nelly.”

When she looks up he has vanished. Just like that. Without a warning. Looking around. Desperately. Her hands balled to fists.

“No. Rafael. RAFAEL!”

She falls to the ground, her legs seem to have lost all strength to keep her up. Her hands before her face.

“Please.”

Soft sobbing, tears are running down her cheeks.

“Please, don’t take him away from me again.”

She shakes her head.

“It hurts. It hurts so much. Please… Please, don’t take him away again…”

Nelly blinks when a ray of sunlight touches her face. A doubtful, a curious look. She doesn’t know why she looks at her hand. There is nothing to be seen there anyway.

In the back of her mind lingers a trace of a dream. The memory of being held safely in someone’s arms. It doesn’t mean anything to her though.

This is so sad. The unremembered dream that's so important, but Nelly doesn't even realize it. Her dreading to go to sleep, because she knows what she will lose, but unable to fight against it.

Man, that ending. It's the more hurting because she can't remember what she's lost.
