Ten

Nida can feel the walls shaking, as her chief bodyguard pulls into the room and barricades the door.

"What's happening?" she asks, as calm as she can be.

"The palace is under attack," the guard replies. "We should be safe here."

Nida nods, and moves farther from the window, keeping one hand on the shaking wall.

Nine

Now she can hear shouting outside. "Are they getting closer?" she asks, still calm--have to stay calm.

Her bodyguard doesn't answer, which probably means yes.

Hopefully the children are somewhere safe.

Eight

She notices the other door--the one leading inward, to the rest of her suite--rattling. "Captain," she calls out, backing a few steps away.

Her bodyguard swears, and points her to a more sheltered spot--then the shelf moves, and it's Keta. Alone--without her husband or any of her siblings. Just Keta.

"Mother?"

Nida relaxes. "I'm here," she says. "Are you all right?"

Keta nods.

Seven

"It's mages, Mother. Three of them. Only one is collared."

Nida closes her eyes. Doubly dangerous, then--depending on how much damage is done in the attack, this might only increase Sorell's zeal. What good she'd managed to do in thirty-seven years of marriage could be gone in a heartbeat.

"Mother, do you see now?" Keta asks, helplessly.

Nida answers carefully. "Whatever else I still believe, this danger is real. I won't ignore it."

Six

The shouting seems fainter now, but the walls are shaking badly enough that the window is rattling. "Keta, come over here." She's too close to the glass.

Keta nods, and comes to shelter with her. "We're safe here...?"

"Of course, darling," Nida says, and smiles. "Everything will be fine."

It's a little moment of quiet niceness, in the midst of whatever chaos is happening outside her rooms. Keta is past thirty now, and she hasn't held her like this since she was a little girl. Nida has missed it.

Five

Nida watches her guard, how still he is. They're not really safe yet--even if she couldn't feel the shaking, just seeing that stillness would have clued her in.

She doesn't think Keta knows, at least.

Four

Without warning, the wall to the left of them, the opposite side from the guard, breaks into pieces and an angry, frightened young man follows it in.

The guard swears again, and Nida pulls Keta behind her, trying to think how to get out of this. Chances were the boy didn't know her politics. And explaining them, under the circumstances, wouldn't do any good.

The seconds stretch wider as the guard tries to close the distance.

Three

Nida throws Keta to the side as all that rage comes bearing down on her.

Two

She hears Keta screaming, and prays she isn't hurt.

She can't move, but nothing hurts, just a sort of pressure, intense and inescapable and everywhere.

The ground doesn't seem to be shaking anymore. The boy is probably dead.

One

"Mother!"

She feels Keta's hand press against hers, but she can't say anything.

We're safe here...?

Of course, darling. Everything will be fine.

"Get help! Mother...Mother, please look at me..."

Nida feels very cold.
