Ember 17 - Fog Grey 4 - Feathers

Title: Going backwards
Story: Memories once stolen
Characters: Nelly, Rafael
Colors: Ember 17. Phoenix – Fog Grey 4. Clear blue sky
Styles and Supplies: Feathers (Character prompt 136 - Your character can't remember something important)
Word count: 388
Rating: PG
Summary: A flash of memory in this life. (written for dailyprompt : a step backwards)
Notes: Just a little note to point out that Nelly and Rafael have lived many lives. Together. (for example : The have lived in ancient Egypt. And have lived in the second world war. And have lived in the year 4500. And so on.) And then Rafael has been erased throughout time. Erased from her memory. From her memories.
Also, can I have a story tag please? :-)
Standing still all of a sudden, she looks around. The place looking strangely familiar. Nelly wonders why this place feels so much like home.
The trees that seem to embrace the entire square. The clear blue sky. The sun that falls through the leaves. The soft breeze and the play of shadows on the stone ground. The benches that are placed around the edge of the square, forming a circle.
There is a flash of a memory when she looks at an old couple, sitting hand in hand on one of the benches.
She sat there once like that. With ...
Closing her eyes, she takes a deep breath. There is a name. The name of a boy. Man. Etched alongside the memory.
Rafael.
She wonders who he is. Was.
Were they family? Neighbors? Friends? ... Lovers even?
"Don't even try to understand."
Her eyes widen comically when she hears a little boy call out. Black hair just as messy as Rafael's.
"Don't try to understand me. Just love me."
His voice suddenly rings through her head and she takes a step back. Setting herself down on the bench.
You need to go backwards Nelly. You need to remember...
The sad smile on his face. Resigned. Given up on hope.
How clearly she remembers now.
"Rafael."
A soft whisper. Tears filling her eyes. They were friends. Life-long friends. They were lovers even... Soul mates.
"What have you done? What have we done?"
She buries her head in her hands.
"They erased you..."
His image smiles in her memories and thoughts.
"But every time you remember me, I am slowly coming back... Like a Phoenix, rising from the ashes. I will come back Nelly."
Looking back up to the sky. Her eyes still closed. Her face in the direction of the sun, letting the sunlight caress her.
She remembers now. All the places. All the times. Always together.
She also knows that, now she finally remembers in this time, she will have forgotten everything again when tomorrow she'll find herself somewhere else.
Laughing softly, though there is no joy in the sound, she wonders where she'll end up next. Going backwards...
There are many lives to come still. Many places she needs to remember before...
"One day you will be back Rafael."
Make me remember you.
