"Do you solemnly swear to keep this man by your side, in spirit if not in body, to build a life and family with him to the best of your abilities, for as long as you both shall live?"

"I do."

Deva felt a profound sense of relief as her brother was bound to the Glass princess. She trusted Andrell to hold to the peace, but Andrell was, after all, only one man—only one king--after generations of increasing prejudice against mages. There was little guarantee that, without a strong incentive, future generations wouldn’t undo it all. But Nolani was one of the strongest women Deva had ever had the pleasure to meet. If anyone could help him weather the storm and start real, long-term change, it was her.

As they raised their bound hands to the sky, Deva let out a long sigh and resisted the urge to slump in relief. Finally, finally things would really change for the better in her broken city.

Kesshare smiled to herself, watching the priest twine a golden ribbon between her daughter's hands and the King of Feredar's. She had overseen the careful wording of the marriage contract--so long as Nolani's first child was a boy, the empire Kesshare dreamed of could be achieved bloodlessly. Well, at least the first major step westward. There would be conquest in other directions.

As they raised their bound hands to the sky, Kesshare felt a profound sense of triumph. She had won. And, in a few short years, she would conquer.

Andrell's hands were shaking slightly as they were tied to Nolani's. She was smiling at him, and he...he'd gotten to know her, over the past two years since they'd agreed to marry. She'd even come to see him, spent weeks helping him recover, after he'd nearly died six months ago in that explosion. He couldn't say that he loved her, exactly--he wasn't even really sure what that might mean, other than knowing that he didn't look at her the way his parents had looked at each other--but...

As they raised their bound hands to the sky, Andrell felt oddly happy. Nolani wouldn't have been his choice for a bride, if he'd had the opportunity to choose the way his father and brothers had, but even so, he couldn't imagine surviving the future with any other consort.

It had been worth it, coming back to Feredar to see Nolani married. Isshiri hadn't spent much time with Andrell, even after his defection, but what little he had spent had left him with a strong impression of the man. A strong positive one, despite where he'd grown up.

As they raised their bound hands to the sky, Isshiri absently traced his collar-scar. This marriage wouldn't undo all the damage Andrell's family had done to the world, but Isshiri couldn't think of a better way to start healing it.

Keta watched the wedding, hidden in the vast crowds that had gathered to witness her brother's marriage to a mage. It was astounding to her, that things had changed this much in so little time. Five years ago, Kellom was ordering a purge of all mages in Feredar. And now, their little brother was marrying one. Their little brother was making her their Queen.

As they raised their bound hands to the sky, Keta swallowed the strange, sickening discomfort that began to build inside her. Kellom had gone too far, to be sure, but she was positive that what Andrell was doing was laying the ground for even more terrible times to come.

The wording of the marriage-oath was one taken from her people, and Nolani felt oddly comforted by it, even if most of the rest of the rite was pure Feredar. She smiled a little at Andrell as their hands were bound together by a gold satin ribbon. Andrell may not have been her personal choice--and might not ever have been, if she'd had the opportunity to choose--but she meant what she said.

As they raised their bound hands to the sky, Nolani felt a sense of peace. She would do her best to be good to Andrell, and keep the spirit as well as the letter of her vows. For as long as they both should live.
