Summary: Today was the day... wasn't it?

Qhoroali sat at the head of her bed, with her back against the wall and her legs crossed in front of her. Her mother had not required her presence at the temple that day, so for the moment, she was permitted to spend her time as she pleased and wear what she preferred. She'd made these particular loose trousers for herself only a few weeks ago, and was very happy with them.

Setsiana sat facing her, similarly cross-legged at the foot of the bed, leaning forward slightly, her full skirt pooled around her. She stopped what she had been moving to do suddenly, pulling back, and looking around a bit in confusion.

Qhoroali frowned. “What’s the matter?” she asked. She was a bundle of nerves, presently — if Setsiana was going to back out of this, too, she had a feeling that they might never go through with it. But she had to know. She had to find a resolution for her confusion.

“What were we going to do, here, exactly?” asked Setsiana, slowly and carefully. “Could you remind me? I’ve forgotten.”

“Well, I thought— I thought I would like to kiss you. Well, I mean, we did that before, already. But maybe— something more, too?” Qhoroali’s thoughts felt hazy for some reason, and there was some thought, some idea that they seemed to completely avoid, fleeing like a lizard fled the light, creating a void that she could not reason through.

“Ahh,” said Setsiana, considering her for a minute. “How old are you?”

Qhoroali blinked in confusion. “Sixteen. We both are.” Why would Setsiana forget such a thing?

“Well,” said Setsiana, “then I don’t think we will do that.” She laughed a little. “I guess I should tell you, this is just a dream. We seem to be sharing them now, I gather this must be one of yours, since I don’t recognize this place. Probably you wanted someone else to be here, instead, right?”

Qhoroali shook her head. “It’s not a dream,” she said. “And who else would be here with me, besides you?”

“I don’t know,” Setsiana admitted. “I don’t know who you knew at this point in your life. You didn’t meet me until much later.”

“No, that’s not true,” said Qhoroali. “I always knew you. You were always with me, and I was always with you. And we always will be.” She wasn’t sure how she knew what would happen to her in the future, but it seemed right, so she didn’t question it.

“I was born 250 years before you were,” said Setsiana. “So logically, you couldn’t have met me until after you learned to time travel, right? And I don’t think you have learned that yet, at the time we’re at in this dream.”

Qhoroali frowned again. She was sure this must be wrong somehow, but she couldn’t say exactly why. Frustrating.

“Anyway,” Setsiana continued, “just as an experiment — if at some later point, you wake up and realize this was a dream, maybe you could say something about it to me at some point during the day. Just to let me know you understood. And maybe… I’d like to know if I’m just intruding on this dream and it should have been about someone else, or if there was actually a reason you wanted it to be me, here, specifically. I know you probably don’t have lucid dreams like I do. But if you could just talk to me about this later, I’d be very grateful.”

The things Setsiana was saying weren’t making any sense, and it was starting to feel like they wouldn’t go through with it after all, which was disappointing. What it was exactly that they were going to go through with was still something that she couldn’t get her thoughts to focus on properly, but she was sure she’d remember it later.

The room started to fuzz around her and Setsiana blurred and disappeared, confirming that whatever it was would not happen today.
