there were whispers in the dark. in the cells, in stolen moments outside at work. other captives, plotting ways to run, or to fight.

sometimes, mel heard whispers about people who had made it out of the city; broken their collars; disappeared into something other than death.

for a long time, there weren't any whispers about what happened to them, the ones that made it out, but it didn't matter. it was enough that they had gotten away.

he listened to the whispers, and said nothing. he didn't plan on doing anything with what he heard, not then, but he listened. it was--nice, sometimes, after a harder day, to hear the fragile, defiant hope underneath the voices.

and then the whispers spoke of a ship, on the river--if you could get that far, if you could make it, you'd be safe and free.

and then isshiri came, a spark of light into his life, illuminating the path laid out over years by the whispers.

for the first time in a long time, mel began to see a way forward, to draw a map down that path, out to the river and whatever lay beyond.

and, maybe, if things went right--if he made it, if he got isshiri out--maybe he could find his way back.

maybe he could become another lifeline--something whispered in the dark.

I don't know the broader context here, but I really like this little piece, it really gives a good feeling for the situation, of holding onto hope in the face of darkness and oppression. Thanks for sharing!

I fucking love the way this is written- it's so clever and the lowercase does so much and augh- and I fucking hate you because I know how it ends so we are no longer friends for the next minute or whatever.
