Sammy was in a dark void, floating in space. Her frilly dress spilled around her, the tail ends of her bow flowed into the air- it was if gravity did not exist here.
"Hello?" She asked.
"Help me!"
Is that... no! No, that's... that's... -----!?
"-----!" Sammy yelled. "-----, I'm coming for you- just you wait!" She swam through the darkness, the air almost like water in her lungs, and pushed through the currents, reaching out an arm to grab-
Sammy woke up, in mundane clothes, and took a second to shake the sleepiness out of herself. The sunlight streamed in through the windows. It was a regular day. No dark, swimmable void, no person calling out for help.
What... what was that?
"Hey... hey, Mexico." She said, poking the stuffed bear she had since she was a child- the stuffed bear that had ended up possessed by a spirit from another world. "Mexico."
"...Yes?"
"I had a weird dream." Sammy said. "About someone. But I don't know who."
"And...?"
"They might be a Prisoner in a Nightscape!" She yelled, shaking them. "I have to help them!"
"...Please don't make me go to school in your place again-"
"You're going to school in my place again." Sammy said, before chuckling. "Or at least, you would- but it's a weekend."
"One day you're going to have to actually go to school every once in a while!" Mexico shouted, shortly before Sammy tossed them in her bag and ran off towards the kitchen, where she snagged a cold poptart from the fridge, waved goodbye to her parents- "Bye mom, bye dad, I'm off to go exploring!"- and ran off, tearing open the foil. She took a bite, the cookies & cream flavor filling her mouth.
"So, Mexico, where do you think the Nightscape is?" Sammy asked.
Mexico sputtered from inside the bag, before popping their head out and glaring right at Sammy. "H-How should I know!?" They yelled. "You had the dream, Sammy!"
"Yeah, and you're the Shikigami!" Sammy yelled. "You should know... something? I... don't exactly know..."
"I know about the Dreamlands, the kingdoms, how to pretend to be you including all of your annoying personality quirks, and... that's it!"
"Well- know more things!" Sammy yelled, before suddenly flinching. There's darkness afoot!
Quickly, she dug past Mexico and pulled out her wand, before running into a nearby alleyway and tossing it in the air.
"Sunshine and moonlight, make me into a magical girl!"
"Please find catchphrases that don't give away the fact that you have powers!" Mexico yelled as a magical burst of light covered Sammy's entire body.
She caught her wand, now longer, and it glowed with a magical power. "We're about to show these monsters the Gulf Of Mexico: Fire Edition." She said, flames burning on the edge of her wand.
"That-" Mexico choked. "You said that about the president last night!"
"Yeah, and I'm pretty sure he's a Defiler." Sammy spun her wand and ran into the fray.
"BE NORMAL!" A woman, too perfect looking, as if she were a doll moving, screeched at two women holding hands. "YOU CAN'T DO THAT!"
The girlfriends flinched, one moving to jump in another's arms.
"Don't worry!" Sammy yelled. "I'll save you!" She shot a burst of magic at the woman. "You're not allowed to dictate who and who can't fall in love with each other!" She yelled. "After all... I'm in love with a girl too!"
It was true! Sammy was head over heels for Avery, her crush and classmate who always sat next to her and had a voice that sounded like...
Like...
"Help me!"
"AVERY!" Sammy yelled, running. The monstrous woman chased after her, but... she had more important matters to attend to!
"There's- there's no way you know where to- Avery's been absent since yesterday- you would have noticed these things if you just went to school!" Mexico yelled.
"AVERY!" Sammy yelled, running into the Nightscape. "Avery... I... I heard you in a dream! Please..."
"Help me!" Avery yelled, her dress torn. Her hands were tied to the wall with ropes. Posters covered the wall- posters advocating for every homophobic thing Sammy could think of- and others she couldn't.
Sammy swung her wand, shooting out a burning wave of flame towards the ropes and posters. They burnt around Avery, releasing her from the bondage.
"T-Thank you... thank you..." Avery said, shaking. "I... I..." She cried. "Everyone told me... it was wrong and weird to like girls... But I can't help it... I think Sammy is cute..."
Mexico popped their head out of Sammy's bag. "...Don't you dare." They whispered.
"I have something to show you." Sammy said, smiling. "But first... I gotta burn this place to shreds!"
"Ta-da!" Sammy said, detransforming! "I saved you!"
"I told her not to reveal herself to you." Mexico said, popping out of Sammy's bag.
"...My crush has magical powers..." Avery said... "AND HER STUFFED BEAR TALKS?!"
"Don't say that too loudly!" Mexico yelled. "And I'm not actually her stuffed bear- I'm a spirit possessing her stuffed bear who tried to pull the 'I'm your stuffed toy given life!' shtick on her and she called bullshit immediately."
"And then you were like 'It worked on my last Princess!' and said last Princess was five years younger that I am!" Sammy gave Mexico a lighthearted punch on the head.
Avery looked at the duo with wonder in her eyes.
"So, when's the first date?" Sammy asked.
Avery flustered. "I-I- Well!"
"Now?"
Avery all but collapsed. "I... I... let me get ready first!" She squeaked. "Let me get ready first!"
"I gotta say!" Sammy smiled, looking right at Avery. "It's not everyday your crush calls out to you in a dream and has you run in and save her from her own homophobia-related Nightscape!"
The two (well, three, counting the stuffed bear.) of them were seated at a Mexican restaurant, currently awaiting their tacos.
"Sammy, I know this question may be pointless considering you're a Princess of Swords, but have you ever heard of the word 'tact'?" Mexico asked, popping their head out of Sammy's bag.
Sammy punched them right in. "No talking stuffed animals!" She snorted. "Anyways, what's your favorite part of my whole 'magical girl' thing? The 'saving you', the fire powers, the frilly dress, the epic staff?
Avery uncovered her face with her hands to respond. "I... Well... Probably the dress." She squeaked. "...It looks nice on you."
Sammy's phone buzzed with a text, causing her to reach into her bag and pull it out with a spin. 'NO MAGICAL TALK IN PUBLIC' It said, sent from Mexico's phone number.
She texted back. 'They talk about magic and crime and whatever in public ALL the time in tv shows! We'll be fine!' and pressed send.
'REAL LIFE IS NOT A TV SHOW' Mexico sent back, and in response Sammy rolled her eyes and punched where Mexico was in the bag with a "Be quiet!".
"... Your magical... familiar... spirit... thing can text you?" Avery asked.
"Yeah?" Sammy said. "Imagine a magical girl mascot, but they can also send you text messages and pretend to be you at school."
"... Mexico's pretended to be you at school?"
"A few times, yes." Sammy's phone buzzed.
"What are they texting you now?"
"Ah, nothing important." Sammy said, her phone buzzing yet again with an additional 'PRETTY SURE YOU'D FLUNK BY NOW' to join the previous message of 'MORE THAN A FEW TIMES'. "Regardless... if you see me acting weird at school, that's probably Mexico." Sammy's phone buzzed again with a 'PLEASE ACTUALLY GO TO SCHOOL MORE THAN TWICE A WEEK', and to which she responded by punching the bag again. "Shush! I study with the notes you give me and my grades are good, there's nothing to worry about!".
'DON'T MAKE ME GIVE YOU FALSE NOTES'.
Sammy snorted. "Yeah, sure. I'm pretty sure whatever Queen hired you is going to fire you for that, buddy."
"Here's your food!" The waitress said, walking in with a large 5-platter of tacos and a plate of three tacos, before placing them both at Sammy's spot. She turned to look at Avery. "Sorry about your plate- apparently some guy 'palm treed' it? Regardless... please excuse the wait."
"...It's alright." Avery said, before starting at the plates Sammy ordered. "...When you ordered eight tacos, I was expecting them to be small... and now I don't think I can eat one of those, much less..." She gulped. "Four..."
Sammy was already too busy stuffing a taco in her mouth to comment.
