It wasn't that Deva didn't want to get married. She did. She understood the role she had to play--as both the King's eldest daughter and a covert member of the Red Rose movement--and she wanted to do it well. Especially since this was one way she could serve both at the same time. She also wanted children someday, and of course her children had to be legitimate.

But all of the acceptable men on the list that Father had presented for her to choose from were just so...

She wasn't sure what the word was. Many of them were charming, some were even kind, one or two she thought would be good fathers and decent partners in running a household. She supposed that was how she would make her choice in the end. It was just that there was something missing, something lacking, in all of them.

Or maybe the problem was with her, not with them.

Because she knew what she dreamed about at night, and it wasn't charming or kind men. It was a glittering laugh, a sparkling necklace drawing just the right amount of tension to the soft curves of the pretty girls too old for her brothers but just right for her.

Of course, that would never be an option. Not for her. Or, at least, not now. Not soon. Maybe someday, if she ever dared to take a lover...

But she had her duty, and she wanted children. She would find someone she could live with, and keep her dreams of pretty, glittering girls safe in the darkness where they belonged.

I love how you phrase this! And, oh dear, what could it be that's lacking with those men? XD

Ha, how true; I've noticed typos that way too! I didn't see that as one, though. :-)

Pretty glittering girls makes me think of an entirely different song, Girls That Glitter Love the Dark. Anyway, that's irrelevant. Poor Deva. Does she ever get to have a girlfriend?
