“Well,” Gina said, “this is me.”
It was a stupid thing to say. Ivy knew where she lived. Ivy had been to her apartment. A week ago. But she never knew how to end first dates, especially first dates that she didn’t want to end, and standing here in front of her building with Ivy smiling up at her, her mind went entirely blank.
“Sure is,” Ivy agreed. She shoved her hands into the pockets of her threadbare coat and rocked back on her heels.
Gina fiddled with her necklace, then an earring. Pearls, both of them, the kind of thing you wore to a debutante ball. Wasn’t this a sort of debut? She hoped it was, anyway. “So-”
“I-” Ivy broke off, and laughed, her nose and cheeks flushing red. “Sorry. You go ahead.”
Gina smiled, and looked at the building, the road, the night sky, anything but Ivy’s beautiful eyes and laughing mouth. “No, you go, I wasn’t really saying anything.”
Ivy hesitated for another moment, then said, “I have to work tomorrow,” with real regret in her voice.
“Your vet is open on Saturday?” Another stupid question, something said just to keep the moment going. God, why was she so awkward?
“Yeah.” Ivy rubbed the back of her head. “And I’m the newest tech, so I get to work all the Saturdays until I’ve caught up, then we start rotating again.” She laughed again. “Like you care about my work schedule.”
Gina took a step forward, without thinking. “No, I do,” she said. “I care…” She paused, aware that what she was about to say was corny as hell, then said it anyway. “...about everything you do.”
The corniest fucking thing. But Ivy smiled at it.
Oh, for fuck’s sake, this was ridiculous. They were both grown women, they’d known each other for months, and the date itself had gone so well Gina kept wanting to pinch herself. There was no reason things had to be this hard. She took two more steps forward, cupped Ivy’s face in her gloved hands, and kissed her.
Ivy’s mouth was warm and lush, and tasted like the spaghetti they’d had at dinner, with maybe just a hint of wine. She caught Gina’s elbows in her hands and kissed back, leaning forward every time Gina pulled back, and they kissed and kissed until she finally had to push Ivy away to catch a coherent thought.
“You…” She cleared her throat. “You have to work tomorrow. And I’m not that kind of girl.” Though she thought she could be. For Ivy.
Ivy beamed at her, her whole face red and happy. “I might be that kind of girl,” she said. “But I do have to work tomorrow. Um. I’ll call you? Tomorrow? For another date?”
“Absolutely,” Gina said, faster than was probably cool, but it made Ivy beam harder. “Yes. Call me. Tomorrow. Anytime, I have the day off, I’ll pick up.”
“Tomorrow,” Ivy said, and stepped back, her hands trailing reluctantly away from Gina’s arms.
“Tomorrow,” Gina agreed, and stood on the steps until Ivy turned the corner, out of sight.
