Notes: I wrote this yesterday and I had the hardest time naming it. I'm still not happy with the current title, so it much change in the future.
“Why did Her Highness have to get married during the winter months? I’m shivering to death!” Christine Aubert whispered to her husband, Lord Aubert.
Lord Aubert hunched his shoulders and shoved a slice of raspberry cake into his mouth.
Across the room, Princess Marie, Madame Royal, chatted with her guests.
“I wouldn’t have expected a natural born du Bois to marry a d’Ambray of all people,” said an old noblewoman. Marie smiled down at the old woman. She wouldn’t understand.
Jehann came beside his wife and kissed her on the cheek. Marie smiled at up at him.
Trumpets announced the arrival of the King. Little Henri, a boy of fourteen, approached his elder sister. Marie and Jehann knelt.
“You may rise,” Henri said.
Marie was the first up. Henri though younger than Marie by some nineteen years was taller than his sister by a few inches. He looked down at his sister’s face.
“You look happy sister.”
Marie smiled and reached for Jehann’s hand and kissed it. “I’m gloriously happy, dear brother.”
Henri grunted. “Father would have expected you to make a better marriage like Elisabeth.”
“If Father wanted me to marry like Elisabeth, he could have betrothed me to any Adeodatan prince or king.”
Jehann coughed.
“Albabias is at war with Ibonia as I’m sure you’ve heard, Marie.”
Marie nodded.
“Fernando has asked for Mondian forces to back him up,” Henri said watching his sister for clues on her reaction.
Marie looked over at Jehann who raised his eyebrows at her, but kept silent.
“You are the King, brother. I’m sure you and your councilors will make the right choice.”
Henri sighed. He reached over and kissed Marie’s head.
“I have to marry soon, Marie,” he whispered into her hair.
Marie moved back and looked up at her brother. “What?”
“My councilors want me to marry and father an heir.”
Marie shook her head. “But Henri, you are only fourteen. Surely you can at least reach your majority before you have to marry?”
Henri ground his teeth. “Everyone doesn’t have the leisure of time as you did Marie.”
Marie stepped back as though he had struck her. “You don’t have to be mean, little brother.”
Henri looked away. “Pleasant tidings on your marriage, sister, may your marriage be fruitful.”
With that, the young king backed away and walked off. His entourage followed him out of the room.
“Is everything okay, Marie?” Jehann asked putting a hand on her shoulder.
Marie frowned and shook her head. “It’s just family business. Always the same, never changes.”
