"Do you ever feel like you don't belong here?"
They didn't know why they'd said it. Especially in the church fellowship center, of all places, a spoonful of cheese grits halfway to their mouth.
Every Saturday morning was the same lately. The pastor had come up with the name Hominy and Homilies for their Saturday breakfasts, and he'd been very proud of it. And since their mother helped cook almost every week, that meant they had to come every week too; she wouldn't dream of letting them stay home. They were getting very tired of grits.
Their best friend, a girl who'd been their next-door neighbor for most of their lives, had looked at them and shrugged. "Not really," she said. "Everyone's nice here, aren't they?"
They kept their eyes on their spoon, remembering their idea of nice. You should join the boy's softball team at school, one older woman saying, you're so good at it! Or one friend of his father looking at their new pink shirt and saying, That's a bit of an odd color for a young man, isn't it? and immediately playing it off when they visibly cringed....
"I guess so," they finally answered, and sighed.
