When Maya finally got her phone back, it was nearly unusable. Concerned friends had flooded her voicemail; worried text messages overflowed her inbox. And the group chat was stuffed to the brim. The other girls hadn’t kicked her out of it, despite her disappearance, so she had nearly three months of messages. It took her two hours to read through it before she gave up and just skipped to the end.

Most of it was irrelevant, random everyday discussions that they all had, but now and again someone would bring up a rumor about where she’d gone. Noor thought her family had moved unexpectedly. Yasmin, true crime junkie that she was, thought she’d been kidnapped or even murdered and it was being covered up. Alisha thought she was sick. Emmalee just reported other people’s rumors.

One of them was even true.

She should have known Clay would tell people about the pregnancy. His version had her sleeping with half a dozen guys-- the football team, could he get more cliché-- but the others didn’t believe that. Some people would, though. Maya would have to face them at school, when she went back. Two weeks until it started again.

But. No sense ambushing her friends at school. If they were going to reject her, better it happen now. She wouldn’t blame them if they did.

Maya wrote and rewrote her message before finally settling on a simple “hey guys.” She took a deep breath, and hit send.

Fourteen seconds later- yes, she was counting- her phone started buzzing nonstop.

“MAYA” “omg babe” “girl where have you BEEN we were so worried” “where are you??” “your mom said you left? Wtf” “maya maya maya maya maya maya!!” “your sisters wouldn’t talk about you I thought you died????” “you’re back!!!” “you’re alive!!!!” “Maya!!!!!!!”

She didn’t realize she was crying until a tear hit the screen.

Maya wiped her face and typed, “have I got a story for you.”
