Landelye didn't hate Tahnrin. She never had, not really, not even when Uncle Idan disappeared and it became obvious that Father would name one of them his heir.

When they became rivals.

For the most part, it was because she didn't want to waste the energy. Tahnrin (she would not call him Uncle) was her rival, he was a threat to her, she couldn't ignore him. But hating him was active, kept her distracted from the real work of undermining him so she would win.

He was worth her attention, certainly but he was not worth her hatred.

And then came Sefalin.

Tall, beautiful Sefalin, the diplomat priest, with the long row of tiny buttons in his coat of office, just waiting to be undone.

And he loved them both.

Even then--even then--Landelye didn't hate her rival. She couldn't. That would upset the delicate balance between them, a blance that Sef was so beautifully determined to maintain. And it wasn't as though either of them could have him completely, or permanently. His vows, and their roles, prevented it.

Besides. She had a feeling that being cause for active hatred would not please her priest. And if it bothered her a little that his opinion mattered so much to her, if it bothered her that she would rather share him, even with Tahnrin, than let him go...

That was another problem for another day.

So, no. Landelye did not hate her rival, whatever the prize at stake. She made a very conscious effort to avoid it.

But she would admit, in her heart of hearts, that no matter how coolly rational she was in their fight for the throne, where Sefalin was concnerned, she could not help a little irrational jealousy.
