Name: shadowsong26
Story: Taking a Breath
'Verse: Feredar
Colors: True Blue #13. Trust, Amaranth #14. Durendal,
Supplies and Materials: graffiti (Lilith Faire Day 1: Village Stage), photography, tapestry (True Blue + novelty beads), novelty beads (""The light has fallen amongst the living and the dying/And I'll try to hold it in, yeah I'll try to hold it in." - World on Fire, Sarah McLachlan"), yarn
Word Count: 330
Rating: PG-13
Characters: Isshiri
Warnings: References to war and other violence.
Notes: Constructive criticism welcome, as always.
Isshiri takes a moment alone, after he's spoken to the generals and convinced them to let him stay. He sits on the cot in the corner of the tent to unstrap his prosthetic, then lies back, eyes closed, takes a breath; thinks things through.
He's here. He made it. To the war, to the fields and the river outside the city that almost broke him.
And he may be an idealist, but isn't a fool. He knows that a lot of what's waiting for him--for all of them--is more death and more suffering. Even if he survives, even if the friends he makes (and the friends he's already made; he already found Mel in the controlled chaos of the camp and rumors say that Taz comes in and out) survive, he knows it won't be quick or easy or painless.
But he started this, sort of--his first mission here, what he'd learned, had been the official cause. He needs to be here, he needs to see it through to the end.
And when they come out the other side--however many of them come out the other side--he believes they will come out to find a better world.
Sure, he'd be lying to himself if he didn't admit that part of why he's here is also the fire in his core, the one that drives him to take risks and seek out new people and places to explore. Even if it's dangerous. Even when it hurts.
But mostly...mostly he came here, thinking about what he owes to himself, to his people, to the people in that city; the ones he and Mel left behind in the prisons, the ordinary strangers he'd met in the markets...everyone.
He came here thinking about that better world on the horizon, and believing in that.
He's ready to fight for that future. He's ready to see this through, all the way to the end.
He's ready, he hopes, for the war that's waiting for him first.
