Ending things was always hard.
Even if very, very few of Sola's liaisons were founded on anything more than raw pleasure or political necessity, breaking it off took delicacy, and grace, and was never without pain. She had spent more than one night, after having that conversation, commiserating with her husband over a bottle of wine.
But ending it--especially when at least one actual heart was involved--was far preferable to the alternative.
Sola had seen the hollows in her sister-in-law's eyes, seen how oblivious her brother was to his wife's pain; seen how Fera herself couldn't even seem to admit it to herself. Divorce was, obviously, not an option for the two of them, but there were ways they could quietly and gracefully separate, put some distance within their marriage, giving poor Fera time to heal. They would be far from the first royal couple to come to such an arrangement.
But the years ticked by, and neither moved to do it. They probably never would.
It was better, Sola knew, to have the option and the ability to withdraw from an uneven relationship, from one that had no hope of future happiness.
But better didn't mean it didn't hurt.

Right??? They are definitely Bros and I do need to do more with him in general, lol. (I mean, they have Many children together, so there's definitely a sexual attraction, but neither of them are monogamous and they're not romantically invested in each other.)
